The Rhine-Main region does not stand out as an economic location determined by airports and banks. Those who move away from the urban centres can discover that the region also has an incredible variety of history and nature, which can be explored wonderfully on foot. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung has dedicated a series of hikes to the enormous diversity of the landscape along the Rhine and Main. FAZ columnist Thomas F. Klein has now summarized some of the most beautiful and interesting tours in a book.
"Excursions in and around Rhein-Main" presents 30 of these selected hikes and takes the reader to Butzbach in the footsteps of the Celts, to the impressive sea of rocks in Lautertal-Reichenbach, to the picturesque landscape of the Schwanheimer Düne, to the Wiesbaden pheasant house or of course to the Saalburg in Bad Homburg. Popular, more touristic destinations alternate again and again with beautiful insider tips, which make it possible to get to know the region in a very versatile way.
The structure of the respective contributions is very descriptive and helpful. First of all, the special features of the destinations are presented in order to make the reader want to consider a hike there. Afterwards, the walking route is described, so that one can get a good idea of whether one dares to do this route, what one should pay attention to and how much time is to be planned. The most important information such as length, directions, public transport connections, possibilities to stop for refreshments and opening hours of museums and sights are summarized once again. The whole is rounded off by numerous illustrations. This further enhances the effect of the already impressive descriptions.
"Excursions in and around Rhein-Main" is a beautiful compilation of hiking tours through the region that simply makes you want to slip into your shoes, buckle your rucksack and explore the small and big sights that surround us here. Just visit the "Canyon" near Mühlheim am Main, try your hand as a hobby archaeologist at the Messel pit or enjoy the beauty of the Pfungstädter Moors - thanks to the many suggestions and information in this book, there is really no reason anymore to just think about it. If you want to search for historical traces or just enjoy nature, this book is a very helpful companion. Absolutely recommended!
