Are bakeries the new favorite cafés?

Are bakeries the new favorite cafés?
Are bakeries the new favorite cafés?
Are bakeries the new favorite cafés?

All is right with the world at seven in the morning. At least at the bakery I trust. Loads of crispy rolls are waiting on the shelves for me to decide on them, while the first construction workers warm themselves with their second coffee in the sitting area.

I come from a cute village in Lower Saxony, after all. There the baker already opened the back door to the bakery before sunrise. We grabbed the bag with still warm contents and spread blissfully at home at the breakfast table the raspberry jam. When Aunt and Uncle called in for coffee, my mother would quickly grab a few custard bites from the bakery counter. In any case, the bakery was a place to get in and out, but not a place to linger.

Sitting and chatting for a long time - possibly outside with a pot - was reserved for the Cafés. Until at some point the bakers set up a high table in front of their shop. Soon after, chic grey rattan furniture, the kind our zeitgeist likes, was added. Then green plants formed a Caféterrace.
Day in, day out the neighborhood meets here now since then in the bakeries. At my place in Bornheim, a lively regulars' table, which could not be more typical and congenial for the district, regularly occupies the popular table on the street corner. I, too, like to stop there in the early afternoon for a coffee, sometimes strawberry shortcake, even though there's a whole row of "proper Cafés" further up the road.

This amazes me greatly. If I had a choice, my perfect life would consist of spending days in Cafés over lattes and a gazillion newspapers. So what my self-inquiry revealed: a Café is in the neighborhood to chat. If I'm dating, it's still usually at a "Café". However, some bakeries score points for their large selection of reading material. So there should be enough magazines and newspapers on offer. The unpretentious atmosphere also appeals to me. Nicely furnished, but nowhere even a hint of "lifestyle".

And last but not least: the seemingly inexhaustible cake buffet. No one will catch up with the baker there anytime soon. Raisin rolls, Danube wave or Frankfurt cake - the baker has what sweet tooths want ;-)

Three nice bakeries:
