Tingel and fir or castles and ruins? The five best backdrops for Christmas markets in the region
Tingel and fir or castles and ruins? The five best backdrops for Christmas markets in the region

Have arrived. I mean, I've arrived in the run-up to Christmas. It's always a breeze for me. Once walked on the Christmas market, the favorite stands can be checked out and shoo, the anticipation is there. Thanks to fire punch and roasted almonds. I'm being modest about it.

The thing with anticipation may work differently for one or the other. One likes it big and crowded (yes, there should be!), while the other prefers it small, contemplative and clear. Fortunately, the region around Frankfurt has a lot to offer in the way of idyllic and atmospheric half-timbered houses from the Middle Ages. And not only that: even late bloomers can relax!

Because while the Frankfurt market, to my personal regret, always packs up a few days before Christmas Eve, we can *cough* once again rely on Offenbach. On the Stadthof and along the Frankfurter Straße, it's still glowing Christmas-like until December 30. Isn't that fabulous? After all, the festive mood can't just be switched on and off like thousands and thousands of lights. So if you're still in the mood for mulled wine and banter after the holidays, you can then enjoy the twelve-metre-high pyramid in the neighbouring town.

Faithful readers of my blog here know about my weakness for the beautiful medieval town of Büdingen. If Christmas is the season of magic, then the towers, the castle and the festive glow of lights are sure to make the hearts of many visitors beat faster until Sunday, December 4. The region is not lacking in castles and ruins, and so the Taunus region also offers a wonderful backdrop for atmospheric moments at the Christmas market. Kronberg, for example, celebrates on the third Advent weekend in the inner and outer castle courtyard and in the old town. Or how about a visit to Hessen's highest market in Oberreifenberg? At the foot of the Großer Feldberg, there will also be a tempting aroma of cloves, cinnamon and all sorts of other things on the third Advent weekend amid rustic wooden huts. Art lovers, on the other hand, will feel right at home in Bad Nauheim. The art nouveau ambience of the historic Sprudelhof will then form the backdrop for the Christmas market from 16 to 18 December.

That there really is something for (almost) every taste here in Frankfurt is also evident from what the Palmengarten has to offer. For those who don't feel like tinsel and fir, escape into the winter forest without glitter, artificial snow and tinsel. But with lots of flowering mistletoe, white Christmas roses and fiery red poinsettias. For those who make up their minds at short notice, the guided tour on Saturday, 3 December at 3 p.m. is worthwhile during a literary Advent walk. On December 11, the tour of the Tropicarium titled "Plants of Christmas Bakery" will entice you.
