After she has beaten up her biochemistry test and also learns that she is pregnant from her boyfriend, Jule (Mala Emde) no longer keeps it in Berlin. She wants to take her old motorhome to the south to personally deliver the message to the future father of her child. At a resting place she forks up the political student Jan (Anton Spieker), who wants to hitchhike to Northern Spain to meet his biological father for the first time. The first minutes of the joint trip are marked by mutual sympathy and animated conversations. However, the situation escalates when Jan addresses the wrong issue. And so the trip together is quickly over again. But as chance would have it, Jan comes to Jule's aid a little later in a dicey situation and she gives him a second chance. And so a friendship develops on a journey that was originally supposed to last only a few hours, in which other feelings soon come into play…

With "303" director Hans Weingartner ("The fat years are over") has staged a road movie that is at its core really beautiful and full of longing. Mala Emde and Anton Spieker play very authentically and convincingly, especially in the emotional moments. And the landscape shots, accompanied by a pleasantly unobtrusive and atmospheric soundtrack, are partly really beautiful. Nevertheless, the film can only convince to a limited extent at the bottom line.

That's partly because with almost two and a half hours he's just too long. There are several moments that could have been trimmed a little. The story simply gives far too little for such a running time. On the other hand, it is also due to the discrepancy between the quiet, tender moments - which, as already mentioned, work very well - and the "normal" conversations between Jule and Jan. The two talk about evolution, ethics, humanism and other high-flown topics in a way as if they had eaten wisdom with spoons in their rather young years. It is clear what the director is trying to achieve with the sometimes heated discussions. But they seem so deliberate, so unnatural, which is in stark discrepancy to the moments in which the actors can seemingly convey real feelings without words.

That is so sad, because "303" has the potential to be a big road movie romance without any kitsch, a film about real longings, real fears and real affection, full of truthfulness and beauty. However, at some point the artificial, much too excessive arguments get on your nerves, so that the whole movie has to suffer as a result. And that is why, despite the really strong aspects, there is only one bottom line: Worth seeing with some concessions!
