WARNING: This review contains only minimal spoilers!
some weeks have passed since Thanos (Josh Brolin) destroyed half of all living things in the universe by just flicking his fingers. While the survivors try to deal with their grief and loss, the remaining Avengers do not give up. They want to find Thanos who will secure Infinity Stones and bring back their chamberades, friends and families. In fact, they manage to locate the powerful enemy and so begins a dangerous mission in which they get help from a new superheroine: Captain Marvel (Brie Larson)…
More shall not be revealed here about the content of "Avengers: Endgame". After ten years and 21 films, this epic marks the end of an era. And that should not be spoiled by any fans spoilers. Therefore, I will try to say as little as possible about the film. I will tell you in rather daring words how I personally liked this great finale as a fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). I'll provide a more intensive discussion of the plot, some of the many surprises and the ending when the home theater release is due.
Right at the start: "Avengers: Endgame" gave me exactly what I hoped for because the movie didn't deliver what I expected. Like every other fan I had my theories about how the story is continued and completed. But even though I was right with one or two points, I was completely surprised after a few minutes by the direction the story was steered in. I'm thrilled how Anthony and Joe Russo not only broke up the mega-cliffhanger of "Avengers: Infinity War", but how they brought together countless storylines to a more than worthy conclusion. From the first to the last second they give their viewers the feeling that this film was made by fans for fans. Yes, this kind of fan service, which is already very obvious in some scenes, could be criticized. But the way in which the whole thing is implemented simply works too well to be really disturbed by it. On the contrary...
The biggest surprise - and this may be revealed - is how humorous the film has become. After the events from "Infinity War" you really didn't expect to get some of the funniest moments of the whole series. However, they are also enormously important, because they act as a perfect counterweight to some very emotional scenes - and they really have it in them. If you don't shed a few tears, you really have to be made of stone.
Despite a running time of just over three hours, "Avengers: Endgame" sets a harmonious tempo. It's very pleasing that there is actually only a huge battle with the usual CGI-overkill towards the end. Otherwise, the focus is on the beloved heroes and their difficult mission. And it doesn't only have a lot of nice surprises to offer, but also a lot of great moments, which put a happy smile on every fan's face (some of them are so well hidden, though, that you really miss them if you blink only once too long).
Yes, the MCU will go on. And some of the characters will be seen again in other movies (Spider-Man already in a few months). Nevertheless, "Avengers: Endgame" marks a conclusion in a very clear way - a conclusion for one of the most successful film series of all time, a finale that makes you happy and yet somehow sad, and an ending that can fulfill all expectations, no matter how high they may be. I would love to go into more detail and tell you which moments make this movie almost perfect for me, but of course I won't do that to you. Therefore only so much: if you like the MCU, you will love this endgame. Absolutely worth seeing!!!
