Who doesn't know them, the impressive figures who stand in front of the clubs in the evenings and give sentences like "Du kommst hier nicht rein" (You don't come in here) in a loop. In his documentary film "Berlin Bouncer", director David Dietl portrays three legendary bouncers of the capital and uses their example to show how much the city's nightlife has changed in recent decades. The film focuses on Frank Künster, who came from West Germany to a city where Smiley Baldwin as an American G.I. was still guarding the border to East Berlin and Sven Marquardt as a young East German punk and photographer was suddenly surprised by the turning point. The three have very different stories, but they all have one thing in common: they all became part of Berlin's nightlife and real institutions in the city's hippest clubs...

"Berlin Bouncer" is not only an extremely entertaining portrait of three really interesting guys, but also a rousing declaration of love for the capital's club culture. A pure Berlin film, then? In principle yes, but you don't have to live (or have lived) in Berlin to be well entertained and find yourself here. Many of the stories told by Frank Künster, Smiley Baldwin and Sven Marquart are similar to those from other major cities. In Frankfurt, for example, there have also been enormous changes over the last few decades, here too there were legendary clubs that have shaped nightlife and very special types that everyone who knew the scene knew.

However, what ultimately makes the film so worth seeing are the very personal stories of the three bouncers, who also openly talk about the dark sides of their profession. They tell about everyday worries, but also about the fears that come with inevitable changes. That's sometimes very humorous, sometimes extremely emotional, sometimes shrill and then again dark, sometimes over-twisted, then very grounded and extremely human. David Dietl has managed to shoot a film about three people, which has become so much more than it may seem at first glance.

Who wants to experience a very special trip through the Berlin club scene and be reminded of his own experiences can warmly recommend this documentary. Absolutely worth seeing!
