Almost ten years after the last major installation "The Gates" in New York's Central Park, the artist Christo, who had withdrawn a little after the death of his wife and artistic partner Jeanne-Claude in 2009, returned to the public with a new, spectacular art action. Lago d'Iseo, a small lake between Lake Como and Lake Garda, was to become the backdrop for "The Floating Piers". Christo and Jeanne-Claude already had the idea for this installation in 1969, but it could not be realized at that time. That should change now. After the site for the installation had been selected in spring 2014, a two-year process began until the event was presented to the public from 18 June to 3 July 2016, attracting 1.2 million visitors to safely walk over water.
The filmmaker Andrey Paounoy recorded the creation of "The Floating Piers" and the actual event in the rousing documentary "Christo - Walking on Water". From 700 hours of film material, a unique insight into the work of an exceptional artist has been achieved, who is refreshingly honest and shows Christo not only as a genius, but also as a very difficult, idiosyncratic person. The viewer gets an exciting insight into the development of a fascinating installation, which more than once threatened to fail due to big egos, overstrained authorities and the whims of the weather. The fact that not only the beautiful and fascinating pictures are shown here, but also the shady sides are given space, makes this film a great documentary not only for Christos' admirers.
It is simply interesting to see how something emerges from normal logistical processes that fascinates millions of people. How much effort is put into staging something truly dreamlike for a short moment. But it's also exciting to learn that Christo was on the verge of stopping the action because the authorities were unable (or unwilling) to control the flow of visitors during the first few days. In all this, not only Christo is accompanied, but also the people around him, without whom such projects could not be realized - and who must sometimes have the patience of an angel in order to endure the independence of the artist.
"Christo - Walking on Water" is a very entertaining and very interesting documentary that shows how the ideas of a single person can enchant and inspire millions. Great snapshots and fascinating pictures make this movie worth seeing!
