11 Tony-Awards, 1 Grammy, the Pulitzer Prize - these are only some of the awards the musical "Hamilton" by and with Lin-Manuel Miranda could win. Millions in sales on Broadway, almost regularly sold-out performances and storms of enthusiasm wherever the play was shown speak for themselves: "Hamilton", the musical about the life of the American founding father Alexander Hamilton, is a sensation! And now, finally, viewers in Germany can also see the musical, because the film version is now coming exclusively to Disney+. However, this is not a feature film, but a recording from Broadway. Like the musical itself, it is something very special:
The recordings were made in June 2016 in the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway and take the audience into the world of Broadway shows in a uniquely intimate way. It was filmed over four days. First during a live show with cameras in the audience. Afterwards, close-ups and camera movements were filmed over two days without an audience, before a live show was captured again with cameras from different angles. The result not only radiates Broadway atmosphere, but also takes the audience very close to the stage. Hamilton" can actually only be experienced better live.
"Hamilton" offers the audience a rousingly modern presentation of American history, embedded in a hypnotic mix of hip-hop, jazz, pop, R&B and classical musical. Inspired by the book "Alexander Hamilton" by Ron Chernow, author, composer, lyricist and leading actor Lin-Manuel Miranda has really created a musical masterpiece here, which is to be seen in Germany next year, more precisely in Hamburg. But this cinematic recording has one clear advantage: Here you can see the original cast, who played a not inconsiderable part in the musical going through the roof in such a way.
You might think that "Hamilton" tells a story that doesn't work outside the USA. Far from it. The electrifying songs and the modern approach to conveying history make the musical an exciting, entertaining and not at all dry history lesson even for viewers who have never heard the name Alexander Hamilton before. Therefore, for this great filmed Broadway recording, the following is clearly true: Absolutely worth seeing!
"Hamilton" can be seen from 03. July 3, 2020 on Disney+.
