That could be a lot of trouble: The legendary witch Nimue (Milla Jovovich) is about to return. It was once defeated and dismembered by King Arthur. The witch's body parts had been buried in secret places all over England so that she would never threaten humanity again. But unfortunately, most of the boxes in which Nimue's bodies had been distributed had been stolen. To protect the last boxes, Halbdämon Hellboy (David Harbour) is called to help. Actually a good idea - but with a hook. Because she wants to get him to follow his real destiny and bring about the end of the world. But Big Red is of course not that easy to pull onto the dark side. Together with his two new comrades Alice (Sasha Lane) and Ben (Daniel Dae Kim) he wants to put a stop to the witch once and for all. But is it already too late for that?

It doesn't often happen that movies make me really angry. "Hellboy - Call of Darkness is one of those rare cases. First of all maybe: I am a big fan of Guillermo del Toro's "Hellboy" movies and of course I was disappointed that he couldn't finish his planned trilogy and that instead a reboot of the franchise was set. Nevertheless, I remained open-minded towards it, especially since it was even more oriented to the comics and accordingly should be a bit darker, dirtier and more bloody than the first film versions. And in that sense, director Neil Marshall also delivered. But the rest is simply annoying.

Not only that the CGI effects are almost always cheap (for example, when Alice becomes the mouthpiece for the deceased, this is only ridiculously implemented visually), the numerous practical effects are also only partially convincing. Everything seems too much like a trashy B-movie. This may fit the figure of Hellboy in places. But the script, wildly bobbined together from different comic stories, the bad dialogues and a staging that seems to rely only on violent brutality, no matter how over-exaggerated it may be, always clearly pushes the entertainment value down a notch.

One notices that the film desperately tries to be fun. But that just doesn't work. The dialogues are not funny - with a few exceptions. The characters aren't cool, they're just trashy, and the acting performance can't get much out of them, despite reliable actors like Ian McShane. Yes, "Hellboy - Call of Darkness" wants to be a trashy pleasure - but unfortunately the film is only trashy and therefore no pleasure at all. And especially for fans who have been looking forward to Big Red's new screen appearance for a long time, a few good scenes aren't enough to make them feel well entertained at the end. That's why all I'm saying about this movie is to hell with you, Hellboy! Because this mess is only bearable for hardcore trash fans!
