It's not exactly a contemplative family meal that a couple who are quarreling over an affair, the depressive brother of the husband and the grandfather who hits his head with his pension for prostitutes, meet in a remote country house. But then the night of New Year's Eve becomes really gloomy when a mysterious dwarf appears who claims to be God. After a thoroughly credible demonstration of his abilities, the family is willing to listen to the stranger. But what he has to say sounds almost crazier than his claim to be the Almighty: At daybreak, all humanity would die - except two chosen ones to be determined by the Four. If that was really true - who are they going to choose to become part of the new world? Who shall be sacrificed and who may live on? Or is there another way out?

Filmmakers Caye Casas and Albert Pintó were happy to ask one evening at a dinner: If tomorrow the world would end and you could only save two people - who would you choose? The lively discussion that resulted inspired the two of them to make their feature film debut "Killing God - Liebe Deinen Nächsten". And so the deep black comedy is first and foremost a chamber play with a lot of talk. More and more the abysses of the human soul are revealed. That is sometimes wonderfully biting and wonderfully bizarre, but in other places also a bit tough. Unfortunately, this basic idea wasn't worked out well enough to carry a story the length of a feature film.

In the end, the event escalates and turns into a bitterly evil splatter comedy that once again reveals the potential of the underlying idea. The fact that many questions remain unanswered or are only asked by the viewer, but are not even addressed in the film, is actually less disturbing. What finally leaves a somewhat ambivalent impression is the fact that the story takes a very long time to really get going (half an hour passes before "God" appears) and that some discussions go a little too much in circles. You get the feeling that the makers wanted to inflate a material that would have been perfectly suited for a short film into a long film at any price.

Nevertheless: A certain entertainment factor cannot be denied "Killing God - Liebe Deinen Nächsten", especially since the film stimulates a really interesting discussion, which one should not lead in the circle of the family. But as a spectator you already catch yourself thinking about the question who you would save yourself. For this and for some very successful moments the movie gets for genre lovers despite its lengths still one: Worth seeing!
