Almost six years Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock) has been in prison. Enough time to plan the perfect coup. Hardly in freedom, Debbie persuades her best friend and former accomplice Lou (Cate Blanchett) to dare the impossible: steal $150 million worth of diamonds from actress Daphne Kluger (Anne Hathaway)'s neck during the Met Gala. An almost impossible undertaking - but Debbie has a foolproof plan. All you need is the right team, which Debbie and Lou find in the jewel maker Amita (Mindy Kaling), the clever trickster Constance (Awkwafina), the stolen fence Tammy (Sarah Paulson), the unbeatable hacker Nine Ball (Rihanna) and the highly indebted fashion designer Rose Weil (Helena Bonham Carter). Together the women set events in motion that could lead them to incredible wealth - even if everything goes according to plan…
"Ocean`s 8" is not a reboot or remake of the popular "Ocean`s" movies with George Clooney, Matt Damon and Brad Pitt, but rather a sequel - just with a new, completely female team. And it works really well. Beside "Ocean`s Eleven" "Ocean`s 8" is the best part of the series. Granted, the film doesn't necessarily have an enormous depth. And he is certainly not reinventing the wheel. But director Gary Ross and his well-placed cast manage to interpret the set pieces of classic Heist movies in such a relaxed, funny and thrilling way that the viewer has a lot of fun despite the high recognition value.
There are many allusions to Danny Ocean and the events of the previous movies. Nevertheless "Ocean's 8" manages to be something very own somehow. Sandra Bullock is a ruthless crook who is really wonderful. In the English original version she can also use her good knowledge of German, which makes for additional laughter and makes a small guest appearance of a famous German even more amusing. But also in the dubbed version the crook comedy is extremely entertaining until the end.
Anne Hathaway has to be highlighted for the actresses. The entire ensemble is really good - even Rihanna, who hasn't really shone yet. But Hathaway is so wonderful as a self-absorbed acting bitch that every scene with her is an absolute highlight. Her game embodies what "Ocean`s 8" is all about: she just seems to have a lot of fun playing this role. And this is also transferred to the audience, which is offered almost two hours of fun of a particularly amusing kind. Not a masterpiece, but exactly what the audience is promised. And that's clearly one thing: Absolutely worth seeing!
