When he has to flee from his own world, the light blue hedgehog Sonic (spoken by Julien Bam) finds his way to earth with the help of magic rings. In the closer of an American small town he builds a new, safe life for himself. Only one thing is missing here: friendship. One day he makes this friendship rather involuntarily with the local policeman Tom (James Marsden), who soon has the difficult task to protect Sonic from the malicious Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey). He wants to make Sonic's extraordinary powers his own in order to seize world domination. With the help of his ingenious, but also deadly inventions, he goes on the hunt for the two unequal friends, who experience many a turbulent adventure on their escape…
Based on Sega's blockbuster video game franchise of the same name, the first feature film version of "Sonic the Hedgehog" is now coming to our cinemas. When the first trailer was released a few months ago, a cry of horror went through the worldwide fan community. The design of Sonic fell through mercilessly, so that the creators sat down at the drawing board once again. The start of the film was postponed and Sonic was completely redesigned so that he looked more like his game model than before. Basically, it paid off in any case that the screams of the fans were listened to. However, this also makes the cinema version of the video game a good movie.
Unfortunately, this can't be said that way. Surely, especially younger cinema-goers will have a lot of fun with this nimble hedgehog. But it is not only that the production is very interchangeable and too often relies on old familiar things. The humour is also too much oriented towards children up to 8 years of age, while the action is too fast-paced and actually too brutal for small children. Yes, everything is totally overdone, so that even small viewers will never really get scared. But do you have to overwhelm children with fast cuts and loud explosions like this? It's just a pity that this is presented in such an overdone way and without any charm at all.
If it's a good children's movie that children have fun, then "Sonic the Hedgehog" is indeed successful. Even if I don't like it, I have to admit that the movie actually offers a high entertainment value for its target group, for which Jim Carrey is responsible besides Sonic. But if a good movie should be about more than special effects, action and clumsy gags, then parents should rather buy their offspring tickets for another movie. Therefore: Only worth seeing with reservations!
