Cult film from yesterday meets cult film from tomorrow
encore at open-air cinema Frankfurt. A director. One night in Hamburg. One night in Berlin. Two nights in Frankfurt: ABSOLUTE GIGANTEN + VICTORIA ennoble a great outdoor cinema season with over 4,500 viewers.
Films are like longings. Great, big, absolutely gigantic. And once they grab you, they won't let you go. Sometimes never again.
Sebastian Schipper's most fertile time seems the night. His debut film Absolute Giganten (1999) is about Floyd, Ricco and car mechanic Walter, who spend their last night together in Hamburg with a pimped-out Ford Granada. At the soccer table, the gas station and between panel buildings, football fields and musty pubs.
His perhaps most impressive achievement, which catapulted him into the Olympus of German film directors, is, however, the award-winning film Victoria. This time Schipper takes his audience on a long journey through the Berlin night. A film about the wild heartbeat of a metropolis, in a plan sequence that Orson Welles couldn't have done better.
