In 1821, a "Public Natural History Cabinet" was founded southeast of the Eschenheimer Tor as a forerunner of the Senckenberg Museum.
On 13 October 1907, this moved into the new building at the Senckenberganlage. The building owner and still the sponsor today was and is the Senckenbergische Naturforschende Gesellschaft, founded in 1817 by 32 citizens of Frankfurt, which celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2017 with many great special events. As a small gift from the city, the nearby subway station was renamed Bockenheimer Warte/Senckenberg Museum.
The Senckenberg Natural History Museum is one of the great natural history museums in Europe. It shows the diversity of life today and the development of living things (evolution), as well as the transformation of our earth over millions of years.
The Senckenberg, whose heraldic animal is a triceratops, is famous because of its dinosaurs. It offers one of the most extensive displays of large-group dinosaurs in Europe.
In addition to the dinos and numerous fossils of prehistoric animals and plants (including the famous prehistoric horse from the Messel Pit), there are many exhibits of extinct animal species, such as the quagga (a zebra-like wild horse). The anaconda devouring a wild boar actually leaves a special impression on every visitor.
But the museum has much more to offer. Covering an area of 6,000 square metres, there are several thousand exhibits, some of them unique in the world, presented in attractive exhibitions.

The museum houses the world's largest and also most diverse display collection of birds, with around 1000 specimens.
Also worth seeing is the reptile exhibition, newly designed for the reopening after the 2003 renovation.
The permanent exhibitions are supplemented by special exhibitions, lectures and research reports.
As part of the "Project Senckenberg 2020 - New Museum", the floor space of the Frankfurt Nature Museum is currently being almost doubled by 2020. In the process, the four new exhibition areas Man, Earth, Cosmos and Future are also being created. In the "Man" section, the non-profit Hertie Foundation is funding an exhibition section on "Man as a System" with 1 million euros; the content of this section is being designed and implemented together with Senckenberg.
