Mainz: Lots of news in the Prädikat Wine Estates! Every year at ProWein, we give you an overview of changes and innovations in wine and estate, location and equipment, as well as staff and market. You can look forward to new wines, new faces and new appearances. Thus, the implementation of the further developed VDP.KLASSIFIKATION is progressing. Many VDP wineries have already adapted their décor to the four-level classification. Discover many innovations at the VDP joint stand, Hall 6 B 115.

From the regions

- Board of VDP-Nahe confirmed: Executive committee elected for three more at annual general meeting. Chairman remains Armin Diel, deputy remains Helmut Dönnhoff, assessor remains Tim Fröhlich, treasurer Stefan Rumpf.

From the wineries

NEW STAFF

- Since the death of Wolfgang (March 14, 2013), the winery has been run by Hella Hehle, daughter-in-law Dorothee Hehle and cellar master Hans-Jörg Lüchau.

- Cellarmaster Hans-Jörg Lüchau will present his first "alleinige" collection (2012 vintage) at ProWein 2014. Also in the bag: the basic wines of the 2013 vintage.

- With the 2012 vintage, the new cellar master Bastian Hamdorf is responsible for the wines;

- Two experienced professionals recruited for sales: Management consultant Stefan Weber takes care of the strategic orientation, Christoph Friedrich of the operational area; especially support of resale customers at home and abroad is to be strengthened;

- Gabriel Huber succeeded Jan Großmann as cellar master on 1. January 2014 as cellar master to Jan Groß.

- New employee in sales and for events: Regina Görg (since 1.3.2013)

- A lot of new things at the Winery Reichsrat von Buhl! Lease of the previous operators of the winery, Tokuoka family on 31 December 2013, expired after 24 years;

- Since 1. December 2013, Richard Grosche - last editor-in-chief of Meininger's Weinwelt and Sommelier Magazine, director of the Mundusvini international wine academy - has taken over the management;

- Mathieu Kauffmann - working as chef du cave for the past twelve vintages at the Bollinger champagne house - could be won as cellar master. He has already started his work as technical director and cellar master at Reichsrat von Buhl in September. Thus, the 2013 vintage is his premiere vintage in the Palatinate.

- In sales, two important, already well-known employees will remain active: Frank Lucas (southern Germany, the east of Germany and now increasingly North Rhine-Westphalia) and Monika Schmid (Baden and Germany's north, contact for key account and export customers). On site: Klaus Küsters with the Vinothe team;

- Werner Sebastian (with Reichsrat von Buhl since 2004), who has driven the conversion from conventional to organic viticulture, remains field manager.

- Riesling instead of Appenzeller! After 14 years of self-employment with an Appenzeller cheese dairy in Andwil near St.Gallen, Swiss Urban Kaufmann took over the Hans Lang winery in Hattenheim in the summer of 2013, supported by the previous owner Hans Lang.

- Life partner Eva Raps (managing director of the VDP for 16 years) joins the winery in spring 2014 (marketing and sales);

- As of 1. September 2013 Tim Lilienström succeeded Alf Ewald as estate manager.

- Kurt Gabelmann took over the management of the company again at the end of September 2013; now induction of a new employee: Mr. Jens Pape; Pape finishes his education with a Bachelor in Geisenheim this year;

NEW FROM FIRST & BIG LOCATIONS

- End of 2012 dissolution of management contracts, now 7 ha (formerly 9 ha).

- Stettener Stein site classified by VDP as VDP.GROSSE LAGE classified;

- Smaller acquisitions in Gerümpel and Spielberg (approx. 0.5 ha);

- New to the team: Stephan Sänger (second cellar master) and Claudia Collin (sales);

NEW IN SORTMENT & BOTTLE EQUIPMENT

- Presentation of the equipment adapted to the new VDP.classification;

- Presentation of the new classification-compliant equipment;

- Premiere at ProWein 2014 for special specialty: 2012 Würzburger Abtsleite Traminer Erste Lage trocken; shows what the old grape variety Traminer is capable of; limited number of pieces, therefore public tasting probably only at ProWein;

- Leiwener VDP-winery relaunches the equipment of its fine-tart and dry wines; these now in fresh, beige garb; newly designed label and innovative short capsule;

- New equipment with four different labels reflects the four-tier classification model;

- All wines of the winery since the 2012 vintage with QR code, behind: full expertise; for single vineyard wines also terroir description. QR code will be increasingly used at the booth at ProWein 2014;

- New labels with the 2012 vintage;

- Presentation of the new labels at ProWein; the new classification is now clearly highlighted; completely new ways were necessary for the implementation;

- With the new vintage, completely new, classification-compliant equipment, from Gutswein to GG;

NEW OFFERS AT THE Winery

- Opening of the Vinothek (October 2014)

- Extensive investments in the winery Prinz von Hessen: New construction of 100,000 liters of refrigerated stainless steel tank room, expansion of our wooden barrel cellar for white wine to 25,000 liters of barrel room, construction of a new red wine cellar for barrique barrels and piece barrels, purchase of another tank press and expansion of our press house, expansion of our vineyard areas, expansion of a vault into a treasure chamber.

- Currently under renovation: new barrique cellar, new presentation room and tasting room; interior design finished in summer 2014;

NEW FROM THE ORGANIC Winery

- Since 2008, the Würzburger Weingut am Stein has managed its entire vineyard area organically. Since 2012, Weingut am Stein has been a new member of Naturland.

- Weingut Zehnthof since autumn 2013 member of Naturland;

- Winery St. Urbans-Hof focuses on sustainability and becomes a member of the association "Fair and Green e.V."; <link http: www.fairandgreen.de>www.fairandgreen.de

- Winery is in its second year of conversion to organic viticulture;

- "The vines are already rewarding our efforts today."

- With the 2013 vintage complete conversion to BIO and BIO certification

AWARDS

- Reisers wine stone restaurant, located in the winery, has earned a Michelin star "erkocht".

- Weingut am Stein was named a "Highlight of Wine Culture" for its guesthouse and wine plant.
