Content: Always the unsuccessful actor Reagan (Jason Wiles) has visions and premonitions that can not really be explained. For the most part, he ignores them. But when his buddy Double (C. Thomas Howell) sends him a photo from Las Vegas of a woman he's been seeing in his dreams lately, he decides without further ado to travel to Las Vegas. In fact, he quickly meets this mysterious dream woman Monika (Cerina Vincent). Sparks fly between the two and after only a few hours they end up in bed together. After a night full of passion, Reagan visits his friend Double and learns something unbelievable from his girlfriend Andrea (Elisa Donovan): Monika was allegedly brutally murdered last night. But wasn't he with her the whole time? At first he thinks it's a bad joke. But a gruesome truth soon reveals itself to him, leading him to dealer Terry Jo (Jeff Branson) and his brutal boss Eli (Andrew Howard), with whom Monika obviously has a score to settle... Monika - A Woman Sees Red starts with an exciting premise that Steven R. Monroe, director of the remake of I Spit on Your Grave, also executes very engagingly. Using a very artificial, yet extremely atmospheric color scheme, he builds a mysterious story that he spices up with rather atypical images of Las Vegas and a sultry sex scene. The fact that the actors act with effort, but a bit wooden, doesn't bother much. Jason Wiles, known from the TV series Third Watch, tries quite convincingly to get the best out of the script and Cerina Vincent (Cabin Fever) is also trying to put more than just her curves in the right light. Unfortunately, the script gets lost again and again in far too long dialogue scenes, which often just seem like bulky filler. Here, as a viewer, you get the feeling that Monika - Eine Frau sieht rot would have made a great short film, but doesn't contain enough material for a 90-minute feature. Thus, neither the successful visual realization, nor the not quite logical, yet quite surprising ending can prevent the suspense curve from gradually dropping significantly after the very successful first third. However, even if Monroe leaves a lot of potential unused and, given the rather lengthy scenes, the B-movie character of the film also reveals itself more and more clearly, Monika - A Woman Sees Red is, on balance, not a bad film. It's not a particularly good one either, but it's a solid mystery thriller, which already has more suspense to offer with its basic idea than many other home movie premieres. If you don't expect profound dialogues, highest acting skills or gapless logic, you might be quite entertained. And in that case then also applies a satisfied: worth seeing! Picture + Sound: In the picture of the DVD is quite particularly the strongly alienated color scheme. In the scenes in Vegas, green and brown tones dominate, giving the action a very special, somewhat unreal atmosphere. The image sharpness is on an overall good level, only in some darker moments, slight image drizzle can be made out. The sound is available in the German version as a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix, as well as in a DTS mix. The latter is a bit more powerful than the DD 5.1 track, which is also good, but the action takes place primarily in the front area. Only now and then sound effects such as gunshots provide significant movement in the surround area. Good! Extras: As a bonus, there is only the trailer and other program tips of the provider to see. Conclusion: Monika - A woman sees red is a thriller striving for originality, which wants to offer its viewers not only dramaturgically something special. This results in some really successful moments that make the film well worth watching despite the rather wooden acting of the actors over long stretches. Still, towards the end it becomes more and more obvious that some good ideas aren't enough to make up for the complete lack of logic. Nevertheless: if you like decent revenge thrillers and can put up with a certain B-movie character for it, you can safely risk a look here
