Bicycle-friendly redesign: Oeder Weg completely closed

Frankfurt wants to be at the top of the league in Germany when it comes to bicycle-friendliness. Another component to help achieve this is the transformation of Oeder Weg into a bike-friendly street. And this transformation is now in full swing. The aim of the City of Frankfurt's measure is first and foremost to provide a safe and comfortable route for cyclists. But pedestrians should also benefit from the redesign. This is to be achieved through improved walking comfort and more quality of stay. "The entire Oeder Weg, with a length of just under 1.3 kilometres, is to become more liveable and cycle-friendly," says Head of Transport Klaus Oesterling. "I am pleased that the plans are now taking shape."

At the end of last year, the magistrate had presented the plans for the redesign of the Oeder Weg to the local advisory council 3 (Nordend) and presented them in a public exhibition with the participation of citizens and traders. The residents of Oeder Weg were informed by letter. The implementation of the first provisional construction measures is now entering the hot phase.

Starts were made in the past few days in the middle section of Oeder Weg between Querstraße and Glauburgstraße as well as in Querstraße itself. Since the beginning of this week, the access for motor vehicles from the direction of Eschenheimer Tor into Oeder Weg has been closed by means of a barrier at the level of Flemings Hotel. This is intended to reduce through traffic in Oeder Weg from the south. The access road remains open for cyclists. Motor vehicles can continue to enter Oeder Weg via Eschenheimer Anlage. In order to continue to be able to reach the Turm-Center parking garage on Querstraße, a new access option will be set up from Eschersheimer Landstraße.

Due to the road construction work, Oeder Weg between Querstraße and Eckenheimer Landstraße will additionally be fully closed to vehicular traffic in both directions from Saturday, August 21 to Sunday, August 22. It is recommended to avoid the full road closures via Eschersheimer Landstraße, Holzhausenstraße and Eckenheimer Landstraße. Pedestrians can pass both construction sites. In this course, the road will be given a continuous tramline width of 5.5 metres. In addition, a so-called multifunctional lane will be marked with a safety strip separating it from the roadway. The junction areas will be marked with red signal paint. Following the marking work, the ASE will have the new signage installed.

The M36 Metrobus line will run a detour between Scheffeleck and Hynspergstraße via Eckenheimer Landstraße. The stops Unterweg/Peterskirche to Adlerflychtplatz are cancelled. The short trips between Hainer Weg and Eschenheimer Tor will run as normal. Also on the weekend of 28 and 29 August, Oeder Weg will be closed and the M36 will follow the same detour route.

The new multifunctional lane combines outdoor dining with managed parking, resident parking and delivery zones. In addition, it offers significantly more bicycle parking and so-called dwell areas. According to current plans, businesses with outdoor catering areas will move their furniture from the sidewalk to the multifunctional strip, as far as this is reasonable. This will make the sidewalks wider and more comfortable for pedestrians. Furniture for the dwell areas, as well as the placement of tree planters to delineate the outdoor dining area, is planned to begin in the fall of 2021. In addition, supplementary dwell elements and tree tubs will be installed on square-like areas.

The provisional redesign of Oeder Weg between Anlagenring and Querstraße and between Glauburgstraße and Eckenheimer Landstraße will also follow in autumn this year. The implementation in the northern area depends on the result of the further consultations of the local advisory council. One of the topics of discussion is how to avoid through traffic coming from the north.
