Delightfully cool wet: Frankfurt's water play facilities celebrate start of season

Suitable for the rising temperatures, which have sometimes already reached midsummer level, it is called at Frankfurt's water play facilities from now on again: "Water march!". As of today, the seven water playgrounds are open daily until mid-September and provide cooling and lots of fun. Provided, of course, that the weather plays along. The water bubbles at daytime temperatures of at least 25 degrees. In the event of rain, storm or thunderstorm warnings, on the other hand, the bathing fun is cancelled.

Another reason that can lead to the water being turned off is if there could be a possible health risk. Therefore, the water quality of the facilities is regularly tested by the city's health department. If the quality does not meet the standards, then the facilities are issued. This way, parents and children can always enjoy this free recreational activity without worries and with a sense of security.

Of course, some rules should be followed to keep the facilities intact: Toddlers should wear swim diapers when splashing, sunscreen should be used in moderation, and bicycles and running wheels are unsuitable for water play. In addition, swimwear is an absolute must in the water pools: The fibers of street clothes dissolve in the water and quickly clog the filters. These then have to be cleaned at great expense. The consequence: the system has to be shut down. Especially on particularly hot days, this is then extremely unfortunate.

The water play facilities in the parks and the city forest have a long tradition in Frankfurt. The first one already existed in 1927, a paddling pool in Lohrpark. Since then, they have been a popular alternative to swimming pools. Many of the water play facilities date back to the 1950s. In recent years, they have been brought up to the latest technical standards, such as the facility in Scheerwald or the one in Schwanheim. Next up is the Günthersburgpark water feature. Here, too, the technology is outdated and time and again the facility has to be shut down for repairs or cleaning, which is why bathing pleasure is often cancelled for days.

Up-to-date information on the water play facilities is available from the Parks Department at: https://frankfurt.de/service-and-city-hall/administration/aemter-and-institutions/green-space-office
