There is so much grey in a big city like Frankfurt. The following picture will be familiar to many of you: You look out of the window and all you see is a paved courtyard and a dreary garage roof. Boring, isn't it? But now imagine that the courtyard would be full of plants and beds and the garage roof would be covered with greenery and bloom wonderfully. It would not only be pleasing to the eye, but also good for the city climate. </When it comes to beautifying the home environment, garage roofs in particular are often overlooked. But it is not witchcraft to transform a garage roof into a small biotope. The prerequisite is that the roof can withstand some additional weight, i.e. the statics allow a plus of 70 to 150 kilograms. If the surface is already covered with gravel, conversion is usually possible without any problems. </And the good news is that half of the costs are reimbursed by the city through the "Frankfurt freshens up" support programme. That pays off, because the greening of a garage roof costs between 2500 and 5000 euros, depending on the size. An investment that pays off. Because green roofs, backyards and facades not only look pretty, they also contribute to improving the climate in the living environment. </p>
And this is how it works: Interested parties first of all inform themselves at a horticultural or roofing company about the possibilities for greening their roof. Is the garage roof sealing intact? Is a second, root-proof sealing required? A filter layer is then applied to the waterproofing and any additional protective layers, followed by the actual roof substrate, which differs significantly from normal garden soil due to its improved storage properties and lighter weight.
Herbs and sedum species are planted. They are able to withstand the extreme location and tolerate short periods of drought. Should the summer be long and hot, additional irrigation is possible. But the plants usually regenerate themselves during the first rain in autumn.
The maintenance of the roof is simple: one walk on the roof once or twice a year is sufficient. It is necessary to remove foreign growth, clean the drains and remove vegetation from the gravel strip at the edge of the roof, which is necessary for fire protection reasons. Fertilising is optional, the lawn mower can remain in the shed.
If the statics are sufficient, you can even turn the roof into a real garden! You can find further hints at https://frankfurt.en/en-en/themen/climate and energy/urban climate/climate bonus and http://www.gebaeudegruen.info/
