Last days: Rembrandt exhibition already inspired 100,000 visitors

Although not record numbers, the success is more than notable given the Corona restrictions: since the opening of "Call me Rembrandt! Breakthrough in Amsterdam" in early October, 100,000 visitors have already seen the exhibition at the Städel Museum. The show featuring works by the great artist, which was actually scheduled to be on view in 2020, attracted many art enthusiasts to the museum, but was also a digital success: more than 1,300 interested people took part in the online offering "Museum for the Home - Live to the Rembrandt Exhibition." The extensive Digitorial® has been accessed more than 50,000 times to date, and the specially produced podcast "Blinded by Rembrandt" has been streamed more than 69,000 times. The overview tours on site developed as part of the hygiene concept in force are also enjoying brisk demand; so far, more than 3,300 visitors have been able to experience the exhibition in guided tours.

Those who still want to visit the exhibition must hurry, however: "Call me Rembrandt! Breakthrough in Amsterdam" is only open for two more weeks, up to and including January 30. "We are very happy that our Rembrandt exhibition has already been seen by 100,000 visitors. This popularity with the public is a clear sign of an unbroken need for art in times of pandemic. With a clever hygiene concept, time slot tickets in the online store, digital exhibition preparation and, above all, Jochen Sander's fascinating exhibition idea, an encounter with Rembrandt at the Städel has become possible. The deep trust of the Städel public, our sponsors and partners in our work motivates us immensely and confirms us to continue implementing exhibition projects of this magnitude in the future. And so everyone can already look forward to the next highlight in Frankfurt 'Renoir. Rococo Revival'" says Städel director, Philipp Demandt.

The exhibition "Call me Rembrandt!" illuminates the success story of the young, ambitious artist from Leiden to the famous master in Amsterdam. 60 artworks of Rembrandt enter into dialogue with pictures of other artists of his time, a total of about 140 paintings, prints and drawings are shown. The important Frankfurt collection of Rembrandt's works - including The Blinding of Samson (1636) - will be combined with loans from Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum, the Gemäldegalerie Berlin, the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden, the National Gallery in London, the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid and the National Gallery of Art in Washington. Tickets are available through the online store.

In conjunction with the exhibition, on January 21 and 22, the Städel Museum will host the international conference "Rembrandt in the Mirror of New Technological Investigations: Paintings - Drawings - Prints," which will be devoted to current art technological research on Rembrandt's paintings and works on paper. The detailed program for the digitally hosted conference is available at https://www.staedelmuseum.de/de/angebote/internationale-tagung-rembrandt. Those interested can also register there via Zoom.

Following the Rembrandt exhibition, the Städel Museum will present from February 16 "Andreas Mühe. Stories of Conflict" and from March 2 the exhibition "RENOIR. ROCOCO REVIVAL. Impressionism and 18th Century French Art" is dedicated to one of the most outstanding painters of French Impressionism Pierre-Auguste Renoir and his references to the Rococo. Early bird tickets are available now in the online store.
