Straight this year it is always good news when an event can take place. If it is also a beloved series of events that allows visitors to escape from everyday life in special places, then the announcement that this may also take place in the Corona summer makes us really happy. We can announce such good news today: The Frankfurt open-air cinema will go into its seventh round on August 13th. And again, as in previous summers, a very special location has been chosen, which will be transformed into an open-air cinema hall for 14 evenings.
After locations such as the former Deutsche-Bank area (see photo), the Bockenheim campus, the courtyard of the former Cantatesaal or the terrace of Club le Panther, this year's cinematic highlights of the current film year will flicker across the screen in the courtyard of the Old Police Headquarters near the Frankfurt Trade Fair until 30 August.
The new location is really a very special place: For almost 100 years, the Frankfurt police headquarters was at home on Friedrich-Ebert-Anlage before moving to a new building in 2002. The cultural monument, built in the early 1910s in a mixture of neo-baroque and neo-classicism, was abandoned by the state of Hesse. At times still used as a clubloaction and for product fairs, the building complex only found its future purpose when the site was sold to the project developer GERCHGROUP. In the next few years, up to 400 apartments, offices, a daycare center and a gymnasium are to be built here. Thus, once again a site for the open-air cinema has been chosen which will change drastically in the coming years.</This season a colourful mixture of art house hits and audience favourites will be shown again, starting with Melina Matsouka's road movie <strong>Queen & Slim. Also the multi-award-winning South Korean social satire Parasite, which was the first non-English language film to win an Oscar in the "Best Film" category, or the social drama Joker and the Tarantino hit Once Upon A Time. In Hollywood will be shown. Further highlights are the surprise hit System Blasters, Pedro Almodovars Patience and Glory,, Celine Sciammas Portrait of a young woman in flames or Christian Petzold's Undine, in which Paula Beer and Franz Rogowski enchant German film in the here and now. The final weekend ends with the Instant-Open-Air-Classic Bohemian Rhapsody and a brilliant Queen fireworks display in the form of a 22-minute live-aid performance by the legendary band.
Of course, the current distance and safety regulations also apply to the open-air cinema Frankfurt this year. A maximum of 250 spectators* may attend a performance. The entrance to the Frankfurt Open-Air Cinema in the Old Police Headquarters (address: Ludwigstraße 18, 60327 Frankfurt am Main) is only three minutes' walk from Messe Frankfurt. The box office opens at 20:00 hrs on the evening of each performance. The film starts when it is sufficiently dark. Advance booking has already begun. Tickets are also available at the box office at a price of 10 euros (plus pre-sales fees).
All foreign-language films are shown in their original version with German subtitles. As always, culinary delights are provided by Chez Vivi with their Crêpes and galettes. Cold drinks of all kinds are also available. The Freiluftkino Frankfurt is a project of LICHTER Filmkultur e.V. and Daniel Brettschneider.
