Setback for the multifunctional arena at Kaiserlei

After several hurdles had been overcome and many urgent questions had been clarified, it looked like the planned multifunctional arena at Kaiserlei would be virtually dry as a bone since late summer 2019. But now there was a setback for the project, because the final bid, which should have been submitted by the Langano group of bidders by 11 May, was not received by the submission office of the City of Frankfurt am Main. This caused great disappointment, especially for the two city councillors responsible for the procedure, Jan Schneider and Markus Frank, who have been engaged in the very time-consuming negotiations in recent months. They do not wish to comment on the reasons why the final offer was not submitted and are waiting for the bidder's statement.

After the most recent talks - in April alone, two rounds of negotiations with the city councils took place - and against the background of the development report submitted by the bidder at the end of April, the project appeared to be on the home stretch. The very extensive municipal bill, which was adapted to the complex course of the tendering procedure and with which the two departments wanted to obtain the approval of the municipal authorities and the city council for the award of the contract to Langano, has already been submitted for finalization. Only the final bid was still missing, but this important procedural step was not taken. In the past, the duration of the procedure was often criticized, but it was always important for the City, as the tendering body, to conduct the procedure properly. Therefore, failure to submit the final bid meant that Langano lost its status as "preferred bidder".

Sports Department Head Markus Frank explains: "It is a sad day for professional sports in Frankfurt am Main, because after years of waiting for an attractive competition venue that would not only improve playing conditions but also the marketing conditions for the sports of ice hockey and basketball, the realization of the project is moving further into the distance".

Building and Real Estate Director Jan Schneider emphasizes: "The Office for Building and Real Estate had prepared everything to be able to grant a heritable building right for the municipal property at Kaiserlei at reasonable conditions. We have thus paved the way for the multifunctional arena and I am therefore disappointed that Langano has decided not to submit an offer".

The bidding process had produced two suitable bidders. Langano was awarded the status of preferred bidder due to the more compact layout of the multifunctional hall and the compliance with the requirement to offer good playing conditions to the clubs. The second bidder, AEG Anschutz, had only recently expressed its continuing interest in the project, so that the further procedure could be continued with it. Discussions will start shortly.
