(ffm) Frankfurt's municipal forest, the city's most important climatic compensation area, has suffered extremely from heat and drought in recent summers. A large number of trees have therefore already had to be felled, many more than in previous years. Others have suffered from drought damage and have to fight pests such as the bark beetle or fungal diseases. In order to save the city forest, Frankfurt's most important "climate machine", Frankfurt's head of environment Rosemarie Heilig is now calling for a joint donation and planting campaign in the city forest.
"Please help so that our city forest has a chance for the future! Whether with a donation or your energy, we desperately need your support! I am happy about everyone who participates!", appeals Rosemarie Heilig. The planting event is scheduled for Sunday, November 24, from 10 am to 4 pm. "Because of the current drought and in the hope that there will be heavy rain in the fall, we have scheduled our planting day for late November. The rain will increase the chances for the trees to grow well," the department head said.
The planting area near the Carl-von-Weinberg-Park has been chosen by the Stadtforst: "Here we can plant about 4000 small oaks, beeches and sweet chestnuts for five euros per tree and hopefully take care of them from the donations for a few more years so that they grow well", explains Peter Rodenfels, the deputy head of the Stadtforst department in the Grünflächenamt. "All helpers are welcome and are welcome to bring their own shovels and spades - and of course sturdy shoes and weatherproof clothing."
