The café in the Liebieghaus shines in new splendour

It took five months, but now the time has come: the interior of the Cafés at the Liebieghaus has been open to guests again since September 7, 2017, following renovations. Already since a short time one can enjoy the terrace with new furniture and umbrellas in nice weather. All renovation measures were carried out extremely carefully, taking into account the preservation of historical monuments.

"It was very important to us to preserve the special character of this place, with the connection between the Liebieghaus sculpture collection, the garden and the Café. We have strengthened the historic and intimate character of the Café s with a restrained new interior design," says Heinz-Jürgen Bokler, Commercial Director of the Liebieghaus Skulpturensammlung. "We are particularly grateful to the Kulturamt Frankfurt am Main, which provided such active support for the rapid modernization." The necessary renovation work in the Cafés area was carried out for the City of Frankfurt via the Städel Museum. This has made it possible to preserve the beautiful building fabric of the old villa in the Café. The investments for the kitchen, bar and guest room were made by the Städel Museum itself as the operator - around 250,000 euros were spent on this. The Café has been run by the museum itself for a year under the management of Sandra Carle.

The focus of the structural upgrade of the catering area was to renew the refrigeration and kitchen equipment in line with requirements. The kitchen and storage areas now have improved fire protection, new wiring and more effective ventilation and cooling. The visitor area was furnished differently according to the needs of the guests by the architects dierschl.federle_architekten from Frankfurt and the interior designer Diane Boehringer: The entrance area with bistro character serves the quick snack, with high tables and stools. The previous Café-rooms have been furnished in a modern way, for continued cosy ambience above all a varied wall panelling with dark wood, which is even more in keeping with the historical original. The adjoining fireplace room will also be available in future for day-to-day business and has been furnished, among other things, with upholstered sofas and wing chairs. The library in the Liebieghaus will also be accessible to visitors with new tables, chairs and small armchairs. Everywhere the Café offers free WiFi since the summer.

The Cafés range of homemade cakes, quiches and specialities such as the pear or wild berry tart, which is popular with many regulars, remains unchanged - and is even being expanded. Current new additions include a carrot-walnut cake and refreshing lemonades. Allergy sufferers are also catered for: a gluten-free cake is always on offer and guests can also order lactose-free milk or soya milk. Epicureans with plenty of time have five daily newspapers to choose from, which they can browse free of charge.

From September, the Liebieghaus will also be offering the new event series "Liebieghaus Live", including in the Cafés premises: talents from various disciplines, such as musicians, actors or writers, who come from the Frankfurt region, will present their strong voices, unusual stories or experiences in a cosy atmosphere once a month.
