A Visit to the Zoo

A few days ago there was a reason to be happy at Frankfurt Zoo: A Bonobo boy was born on Saturday. The only few days old young animal is lively, drinks with its mother Kutu and is well cared for. The sex of the young is not yet known. It's the third birth for 17-year-old Kutu. "Who the father is cannot be said with certainty," explains zoo director Manfred Niekisch. Two males come into question, the 30-year-old Ludwig and the 14-year-old Heri.

Frankfurt Zoo has been successfully breeding Bonobos (Pan paniscus) for many years. Since 1955, these delicate primates with their striking red lips have been living in the Main metropolis. In 1962 the Frankfurt Zoo was the first zoo in the world to breed apes that were highly threatened by hunting, habitat loss and ongoing civil wars in their ancestral homeland, the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The birth of the little Bonobo is a good occasion to visit Frankfurt Zoo once again. We captured some impressions for you
