Frankfurt's twin cities

Frankfurt am Main has 17 twin cities on four continents. We will introduce these cities to you in more detail at irregular intervals.

Part 1: Toronto

Toronto, Canada's largest city

Twin City since 1989

The first stop on our trip is Toronto, the largest city in Canada, which has been Frankfurt's twin city since Sept. 26, 1989. Toronto is an extremely multicultural city with 2.6 million inhabitants in the immediate metropolitan area and 5.5 million in the greater metropolitan area. The many different cultures that meet here make for a very colorful, diverse picture, which is reflected especially in the cultural and gastronomic offerings of the city.

For tourists, there is of course much to discover here, which is part of the absolute must-see program. Expensive but worthwhile is a visit to the CN Tower, the tallest freestanding tower in the world. The view that you can enjoy from the tower is really spectacular. But a stroll through Downtown, a walk in High Park or a visit to the numerous theaters and museums should also be planned - at least if you want to follow the typical tourist paths.

If you want to get a little off the beaten path and get an idea of the city's diversity, a visit to the Kensignton Market is recommended. This alternative neighbourhood boasts a number of unusual shops and gastronomic features. Here you can discover fascinating graffiti art on the houses and get with pleasure sometimes spontaneous musical interludes from the balcony.

Kensignton Markets

Toronto Island and skyline

If you want to escape the urban jungle and enjoy a very special view of the city's greatskyline, plan a trip to Toronto Island. Here there is a beach, a small fair in the summer, restaurants, but no shops, cars or hotels. But if you do a little research, you'll come across one of the few B&B deals that allow you to stay overnight on the island. And it's really worth it, because the view of the skyline from the water at night is breathtaking to say the least.

Toronto is an exciting, extremely vibrant and colourful city.

In some places quite different from our Main metropolis, in others it reminds a bit of Frankfurt's big sister. In any case, it is worthwhile during a visit, in addition to the typical tourist destinations to look in smaller neighborhoods or on the offshore island.
