Tips for the little holiday in between

It's summer! Especially when the temperatures are skyrocketing, it is rather uncomfortable, hot and stuffy in the city, at home or in the office. There one needs cool wetness, sunbathing lawns for relaxed sunbathing or not quite so hot places under shady trees. Of course, the numerous outdoor swimming pools in and around Frankfurt offer you all this. But also some bathing lakes in the region invite to a small holiday for in between. An overview of the outdoor swimming pools

Whether the Brentanobad with its large sunbathing lawns, the Stadionbad with its many sports facilities or the family-friendly outdoor swimming pool Eschersheim with its large slide - Frankfurt has some really beautiful outdoor swimming pools to offer in its districts and in the surrounding countryside with an attractive offer for every taste.

One of the largest sunbathing lawns in Frankfurt and a 220 m long natural stone pool invite you to sunbathe and swim. There is also a pancake pool and an extensive sports area. Beachvolleyball players also get their money's worth.

The reed bath is heated – if it should be a little cooler – offers a 50m swimming pool, non-swimmer pool, a 1, 3 and 5m jump, huge meadows to relax, as well as a fitness center, a sauna area and an extensive aqua course program.

The bathing time can be extended by 1 to 2 hours in midsummer weather in the evening.

The Hausener outdoor pool has a combined swimmer and nonswimmer pool as well as a large play and sunbathing lawn with sunny and shady places. A special feature of the outdoor pool: the pool is heated. So you can go swimming here confidently even in cloudy summer weather.

In the solar-heated swimming pool with a view of the Taunus you will find peace and relaxation from urban stress. The snake slide, the playground or even the children's playground and the many other leisure activities make the bath an ideal place for the next family outing.

The Stadionbad offers a good selection of swimming pools, from sports to paddling pools, everything is available. A paradise for water rats. There is a 10m diving tower, a 1 and 3m diving board and 5 and 7.5m platforms. A 118m slide and the Aqua Fun water playground are among the other highlights of the outdoor pool.

The popular lake dam pool has no less than eleven swimming pools to offer. There is also a 70-metre giant slide, a large reclining area, an area for senior citizens and, in summer, a nudist area. Here everyone gets his money's worth.

Forest swimming pool Kronberg

The Waldschwimmbad Kronberg is open from May to about mid September. The peculiarity here is that the basins are filled with spring water from the brushing gallery. The non-swimmer area scores with a 50-meter slide, and there are also bottom bubblers, current channel, water cannon and back showers for even more bathing fun. Deck terraces, a children's playground, a mother-child area and a restaurant also invite you to relax in the forest swimming pool.

Surrounded by a park of about two and a half hectares, the swimming pools of the open-air swimming pool offer possibilities for cooling off, for sporting activities and simply for having fun. On the large sunbathing lawn and under the old trees you can relax, while a large terrace is the perfect place for a tasty meal. For children there is a playground and a non-swimmer pool with water games. Simply beautiful!

The total 1340qm water area of the natural pool are divided into three pools: One for swimmers with one-meter and three-meter springboard, one for non-swimmers with slide and another for small children with water games and bubbling stones. The bathroom also has a playground, a beach volleyball court, a football field and table tennis. Of course there is also a large lawn for relaxing.

Langen Forest Lake

opening hours: The lido is usually open daily from mid-May to mid-September from 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. The Langener Waldsee is a real idyll and with 72,000 square metres of water the largest leisure and recreation centre in the Rhine-Main area. 900 metres of sandy beach and inviting sunbathing lawns make the area around the spacious lake a popular destination for excursions. There is a large bicycle parking lot as well as a parking lot for cars. There are also beach volleyball courts, a snack and drink stand and a nudist area. Dogs are not allowed.

Swimming lake Mörfelden-Walldorf

The Mörfelden-Walldorf bathing lake is a popular destination not only for Frankfurt bathers. You can relax here in beach chairs, there is a beach volleyball court and table tennis, a barbecue area and much more.

Entrance from 3 € adults, 1,80 € for teens/students

For the parking lot you have to pay 4,00 € fees (for motorcycles 2,50 €).

The entrance to the swimming lake is free.

A very popular swimming lake with idyllic sandy beach and separate nudist area.  Embedded in the middle of a nature reserve, a respectful coexistence of man and nature is required here. Please note: Dogs, swimming equipment, boats, air mattresses etc. are not allowed! And the passage with the car up to the pond is not permitted due to the designation as a nature reserve.

This extensive natural beach has designated areas for swimmers, non-swimmers, surfers and a separate, non-visible nudist area. As of 2019, the lido has a new operator who wants to offer its guests all kinds of services. Therefore, in addition to the classic lido, there is now also the PINTA BEACH aquafunpark - a true paradise for everyone who loves to climb, slide and jump. The use of the Aqua Park costs extra, a detailed instruction is included.

Slightly further away

For beautiful open-air swimming pools or bathing lakes one gladly accepts a somewhat longer journey. So here are a few tips for excursions, which can be reached by car from Frankfurt in 30 – 50 minutes:

Leisure and recreation facility Meerhofsee

opening hours: May, August, September from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., June and July from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Besides the pools for swimmers and one for small children, the Meerhofsee complex of course has even more to offer: If you don't just want to swim, you can also play beach volleyball, basketball, football or climb the climbing rock. For children there is a playground and the large sunbathing lawn with its numerous trees offers the perfect opportunity for sunbathing or relaxing in the shade. A kiosk and a grill hut are also available.

After extensive reorganization the Opelbad opens starting from 01 June again for its guests. They can not only look forward to the heated swimmer/non swimmer pool and the paddling pool for the little visitors. The magnificent view over the city also makes a visit to the Opelbad a real experience. A Finnish sauna for up to 40 people, a large sunbathing lawn, as well as a playground and the possibilities for outdoor chess, volleyball and table tennis are also on offer.

Besides the swimming pools, which have been renovated in 2010, the former coaster „Jenny“ is a real highlight here. On deck of the ship you can enjoy a relaxed snack. A real eye-catcher! There is also a spacious lawn for sunbathing with many shaded areas, a beach volleyball court, a boules court, a table tennis table and a small football field. Water rats can look forward to a wide water slide and the jump area with 1m and 3m towers.

If you are not looking for an adrenaline rush but for relaxation, you will get your money's worth on the 5000 sqm sunbathing lawn with old trees. For small children there is a water playground. And if you're looking for activities out of the water, you'll find big chess, a table tennis table and a beach volleyball court.

In the south of Darmstadt, at the edge of the Odenwald forest, lies the Mühltalbad, which can score with a water slide in the non-swimmer area and a diving platform in the deeper swimmer area. For the little ones there is also a pool with an elephant slide. The sunbathing lawn and the stone grandstand invite you to relax. Sports activities outside the pool, such as beach volleyball or football, are also taken care of.

A recreation paradise in the middle of the big city – this is the natural outdoor pool Großer Woog in Darmstadt. Consisting of the "family pool" and the "island", bathing fun in natural waters becomes here. For those who prefer swimming, there is a family pool between a non-swimmer, a swimmer and a tower area. Those who simply want to relax should retreat to the island, where the everyday stress can be perfectly eliminated. A wonderful destination for the whole family.

This idyllic bathing lake is located in the forest at the edge of the small town of Lich. About 7000 m² of the water surface are available as a designated swimming area. The forest swimming pool is run by a non-profit association. But also non-members are welcome (but have to pay admission). There is a toddler pool, a kiosk, a beach volleyball court and much more. A place operated with much passion, which is always worth a visit.
