Jade has always been more precious than silver and gold in China. With its milky gray-green luster, the gemstone is considered a symbol of long life and immortality in Chinese culture. The high regard for this material explains the enduring popularity of jade-coloured ceramic glazes in China.

From 13 June 2018, the Museum Angewandte Kunst will be showing a selection of such celadon ceramics in its exhibition and event forum meet asian art. With exhibits spanning two and a half millennia, the cabinet exhibition showcases the artistry of Chinese potters who created pieces of great expressiveness with simple, elegant forms and glazes in the unique color of jade.

Seladon pottery is a stoneware named for its gray-green ("celadon green") glaze, first produced in China around 1000 BC. The characteristic colour is produced during the firing process by the transformation of iron oxide particles during firing with a reduced oxygen supply. The restraint in the colouring of celadon ceramics draws attention to the form and surface, which is often decorated with reliefs. The interplay between the decoration on the body - created by cut decoration or pressed-in models - and the generously applied glaze creates charming light-dark effects, which are created by the alternation of shallow and deep glaze zones.

Beginning in the Middle Kingdom, celadon glazes have been very popular in many ceramic regions of East Asia, such as Korea, Japan and Thailand, for many centuries. At the latest in modern times, celadon became a worldwide phenomenon. In no country, however, has the play with the "color of jade and eternity" been so perfected as in China, as the historical range and stylistic diversity of the pieces presented in this show demonstrate.
