For early Christians, the birth of Jesus of Nazareth plays no special role. The oldest evangelist, Mark, does not even record it. Christians celebrate Jesus' death and resurrection instead. The question of when his birth is believed to have occurred has long been disputed among Christian scholars. It is in the fourth century AD that people in the city of Rome begin to celebrate the birth of Jesus on December 25. Influences from the religions and cults of antiquity have an impact on the origins of this urban Roman Christmas. In the exhibition, embark on a search for clues to the origins of the Christian Christmas - from the sources in the Bible's New Testament to the customs of the Romans to the cult of the Roman state gods and the emperor. Archaeological finds such as coins and figurines of gods from antiquity illustrate the topic impressively.
