From haute couture to streetwear to sportswear: The market for Muslim fashion is growing rapidly around the world. Contemporary Muslim Fashions is the first major exhibition to explore the phenomenon of contemporary Muslim fashion.
After making a splash at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the show's first stop in Europe is Frankfurt. The exhibition presents a snapshot of current Muslim clothing styles from around the world, with a focus on the Middle East and Southeast Asia, as well as Europe and the United States. In doing so, it reflects on how clothing serves to express the many facets of individual, religious and cultural identity - and how it shapes identity. Some 80 ensembles from established and emerging brands, complemented by fashion photography and runway videos, demonstrate the sophistication with which regional aesthetics are interwoven with global fashion trends. Alongside this, original material from the social networks that play a central role in spreading the new trend provides insights into the diversity of positions in the Muslim world and allows various actors* to have their say.
Contemporary Muslim Fashions is organized by the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco in collaboration with the Museum Angewandte Kunst, Frankfurt am Main. It was curated by Jill D'Alessandro, curator of costume and textile arts, and Laura L. Camerlengo, associate curator of costume and textile arts at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. They were advised by Reina Lewis, Professor of Cultural Studies at the London College of Fashion, University of the Arts, London.
