Hans Traxler is arguably one of the most broadly effective satirists Germany has ever produced. The cartoonist, painter and author co-founded the satirical magazines Pardon andTitanic as well as the "New Frankfurt School", he put F.W. Bernstein's most famous two-liner ("The sharpest critics of the elks / used to be some themselves!")into the picture, and he is responsible, along with Pit Knorr, for Helmut Kohl being universally known as "Pear" inthe early years of his reign. Born Hans Traxler on May 21, 1929, in Herrlich, Bohemia. There he spent an idyllic childhood in the countryside until the German Wehrmacht invaded in 1938 and World War II began a year later. In his written and drawn childhood memories, which have just been published under the title "Mama, warum bin ich kein Huhn?" ("Mama, why am I not a chicken?"), the still immensely productive artist has recorded this time as comically as he has laconically. Since 1951 Traxler has lived in Frankfurt am Main. After working at the Städelschule and in the editorial department of the newly founded Pardon, he celebrated his first major book success in 1963 with the science parody "Die Wahrheit über Hänsel und Gretel". Pardon then formed a group of cartoonists and authors who later became known as the "New Frankfurt School". Alongside Hans Traxler as the oldest member of the group were Chlodwig Poth, F.K. Waechter. Waechter, Robert Gernhardt, F.W. Bernstein, Pit Knorr, Eckhard Henscheid and Bernd Eilert. With brightness, speed, irreverent wit and craftsmanship, they opened up new paths to nonsense and satire for comedy in Germany and founded their own magazine Titanic in 1979. In the later 1980s, Hans Traxler took his leave of topical political satire and drew cartoons for the magazines of Die Zeit, FAZ and SüddeutscherZeitung. Robert Gernhardt called him a "world-class cartoonist". In 1992 Traxler actually succeeded in breaking into the American cartoon market with his book "Aus dem Leben der Gummibärchen". In addition, he drew, wrote and illustrated more than 50 other books, including many for children.
