"That separates us from the human train, - The word: Troll, be thyself enough!" The Dovre Old It is the drama of modern man that Henrik Ibsen unfolds in 1867 with Peer Gynt. In order to find himself, Peer Gynt reinvents himself over and over again. Peer grows up as a farmer's son with his mother, impoverished and ridiculed by village society on the fjord. He takes refuge in fantasy worlds and tall tales and believes he is destined for greater things, namely to become emperor of the world. His journey begins with a wedding feast and the robbery of the bride. He enters the mystical world of the trolls, begets a child, lives as a hermit in the forest, leaving behind his mother, child and the love of his life, Solvejg. An ecstatic escape begins, driven by the fear that the lies will be exposed - Peer's existence is in the end a hollow form, fit only to be melted down.
