Philip H. Anselmo is an artist with cult status - perhaps a little scratched, scarred, singed and somewhat tarnished by time, himself and others. His new collaboration with The Illegals, the band Phil himself founded, is as brutal, kicking, lashing and rage-filled as you'd expect from this artist and after Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals' debut "Walk Through Exits Only" (2013). Their follow-up album "Choosing Mental Illness As A Virtue", a metaphorical fist to the face and display of pure power, leaves nothing to be desired by his fans. The album is not simply a repeat of the past - as tempting as that may sound considering the fact that no other artist left a deeper impression on 90s heavy metal than PANTERA. The Texans raged, roared and unstoppable their way through the metal scene, establishing an enduring legacy in the process. Philip H. Anselmo acted as frontman, an image of rage and hostility personified. What followed, with Down and Superjoint Ritual for example, further cemented the singer's reputation as a living legend. As an artist in his own right, Phil eventually went the solo route with Walk Through Exits Only, which allowed him to do exactly what he liked - without having to compromise at all.
Now, "Choosing Mental Illness As A Virtue" follows in the path that Philip H's debut. Anselmo & The Illegals paved, but in doing so unites the mega-heavy, raging monster born of Pantera's visceral aggression and power with the crushing thrash and southern sludge that Phil and the New Orleans scene pioneered.
Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals are back and about to establish "Choosing Mental Illness As A Virtue" as the new benchmark for extreme heavy metal.
