Ludwig van Beethoven Violin Sonata No. 1 in D major, Op. 12/1

Monday, 21. September 2020 ▪ Mozart Saal ▪ 13.00 to 13.30

Together in the smallest possible instrumentation: with a duo recital, on Monday, 21. September 2020, violinist Renaud Capuçon and his piano partner Kit Armstrong accept the invitation to the Mozart Hall of the Alte Oper Frankfurt. In order for the long-planned chamber music evening to take place, the Mozart Saal will be re-seated in accordance with current spacing regulations and the programme shortened so that the concert can be played without an intermission (concert length: a good hour). In order to enable as many people as possible to attend the concert despite the reduced hall capacity, Renaud Capuçon and Kit Armstrong have agreed to play their program twice - at 6 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. respectively. In addition, the two musicians will perform a half-hour lunchtime concert in Mozart Hall at 1 p.m. on the same day.

Originally conceived as a contribution to the music festival around Charles Ives' "The Unanswered Question" - which will not take place in its planned form due to the current situation - the core idea of the two evening concerts nevertheless remains: Renaud Capuçon and Kit Armstrong place Arnold Schoenberg's Fantasy, Op. 47, in the context of Ludwig van Beethoven's Violin Sonatas No. 1 and No. 10.

For Renaud Capuçon, the Beethoven sonatas are a rich source of artistic exploration; they have been with him since childhood, when he first played the "Spring Sonata" at age ten. "Beethoven doesn't give you room to hide in these sonatas," Capuçon says. "You have to find their backbone, create a structure - and sing. Without wanting to be pretentious: I've always been comfortable with Beethoven, even more so than Schubert or Mozart."

When asked about composers close to him, the Capuçons partner on piano Kit Armstrong prefers to sidestep the question: Art is made up of works of art, not artists, says the Los Angeles-born pianist, who also composes himself.

Due to new seating and new conception, previously purchased tickets will not remain valid, and a new ticket purchase will be required to attend any of the concerts. Tickets already purchased for the originally announced concert must be returned to the respective advance booking office for refund.
