When Japan opened up to the world in the mid-19th century, the West gazed in wonder at a country full of natural beauty, but also at an alien high culture and its sophisticated artefacts. Japonism as a fashion phenomenon was born.

With it, the art form of Japanese cloisonnampersandeacute;s experienced a rapid boom. Artfully decorated vases, plates and bowls in that decorative technique, in which colored glass is fused onto a surface between fine copper bars, were created specifically for an upscale international market. In a combination of Eastern and Western aesthetics, a new style of decoration was created. Even today, the delicate color gradients, finely crafted motifs, and painterly surface effects continue to impress.

Opening Hours:

Tuesday, Thursday through Sunday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Wednesday: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
