From 13 February 2019, the Städel Museum's large-scale special exhibition "Titian and the Renaissance in Venice", with over 100 masterpieces, will be devoted to one of the most momentous chapters in European art history: Venetian painting during the Renaissance. At the beginning of the 16th century, the artists of the lagoon city developed an independent style of the Renaissance, which relied on purely painterly means and the effects of light and colour. One of the most important representatives is Titian (c. 1488/90-1576), who remained the central figure in the Venetian art scene throughout his life. With over 20 of his works, the Frankfurt show brings together the most comprehensive selection ever shown in Germany.

In addition, paintings and drawings by Giovanni Bellini (c. 1435-1516), Jacopo Palma il Vecchio (1479/80-1528), Sebastiano del Piombo (c. 1485-1547), Lorenzo Lotto (c. 1480-1556/57), Jacopo Tintoretto (c. 1518/19-1594), Jacopo Bassano (c. 1510-1592) or Paolo Veronese (1528-1588), among others, are on display. The exhibition offers a comprehensive insight into the artistic and thematic range of the Renaissance in Venice and illustrates why artists of subsequent centuries repeatedly refer to the works of this period. In a sequence of eight thematic chapters, selected aspects characteristic of 16th-century Venetian painting are presented. These include, for example, atmospherically charged depictions of landscapes, ideal images of beautiful women (the so-called "belle donne"), and the importance of color for Venetian art.

The thematically arranged sections provide a systematic panorama of the extensive material. In addition to the Venetian holdings of the Städel Collection, which include, for example, Titian's Portrait of a Young Man (c. 1510), top-class loans from more than 60 German and international museums will be on display

Opening Hours:

Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday and public holidays: 10 am to 6 pm

Thursday and Friday: 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
