Content: When her boyfriend dies during her first sex, young Zoe Benson (Taissa Farmiga) learns that she is to blame. For she is a witch who has not yet mastered her newly awakened abilities. To learn to control them, Zoe is sent to a school for witches in New Orleans. Together with three other young witches she will be prepared for a life with supernatural powers by headmistress Cordelia Fox (Sarah Paulsen). But when Zoe and her classmate, the snooty actress Madison (Emma Roberts), visit the party of a student fraternity, she is mercilessly confronted with the dark sides of life as a witch. Because after Madison is raped by some of the guys at the party, she lets her tormentors crash in a school bus. Among the victims is also an innocent: the sympathetic Kyle (Evan Peters), with whom Zoe has fallen head over heels in love. As a thank you for Zoe's special efforts in killing the only survivor of the hospital accident, Madison steals a revival formula from school to bring Kyle back to life. At the same time, Fiona Goode (Jessica Lange), the Supreme of the Witch Circle, causes a great stir in school after she frees Madame Delphine LaLaurie (Kathy Bates) from her grave, buried alive 180 years ago, in her quest for eternal youth. She wants to know who made this extremely long life possible for her. While the racist Madame has to find her way in a world where the USA has elected a black president, Fiona has to deal with her old rivals, the Voodoo priestesses, in order to reach her goal. But the mighty Marie Laveau (Angela Bassett) pursues a completely different plan, which could mean the end of the witch circle...
witches, zombies, axe murderers, voodoo and ghosts - the third season of "American Horror Story" again has a lot of worth seeing material for horror fans. The concept that Ryan Murphy ("Nip/Tuck", "Glee") came up with for the series again pays off. This season also tells a closed story, which not only stands out dramaturgically, but also stylistically from the others. Individual actors, such as Jessica Lange, Evan Peters or Sarah Paulsen, have appeared in all seasons so far, but always play completely different roles. On the one hand, "American Horror Story" has a certain recognition value and a very specific, recurring character. On the other hand, the series can reinvent itself from year to year and offer the viewer a kind of variety that other series are denied.
In the third year, the women clearly set the tone. There are also some male protagonists in the circle of secondary characters, but first and foremost pure female power reigns here. But what dark excesses this can have already becomes clear after the first episode, when Madison decides to put together the perfect Kyle for Zoe from the individual body parts of her victims, or when Fiona frees the crazy racist Madame Delphine from her grave. But of course this is only the beginning of many bloody events during which such different themes as beauty craze, vindictiveness, slavery, unfulfilled baby wishes or incest are treated - not exactly light food. But this is precisely where the special strength of the series lies. With his very weird, slightly macabre humor the makers succeed perfectly in making the dark themes entertaining. "American Horror Story" is just more than a pure horror series. She is also satire, drama, grotesque and thriller. And this versatility, both dramaturgically and stylistically, makes the series so worth seeing in the third year as well.
Leide can, as already in the first seasons, also with "Coven" the last episodes don't quite keep what the beginning promises. Nevertheless, the series stands out from the crowd because of its concept, its unusual camera work and its very special atmosphere. The good actors (especially Kathy Bates is great in this season) and some extremely intense scenes make "American Horror Story: Coven" absolutely worth seeing for all genre and series fans!
Picture + sound: The gloomy atmosphere of the series, the wonderful morbid equipment and the excellent camera work are shown to their best advantage thanks to the high image sharpness, the harmonious colouring and the very good contrasts. In some moments the picture can easily keep up with larger cinema productions and thus reveals the high quality of current TV productions. The Dolby Digital 5.1 mix sound is also convincing. The more directionally mixed dialogues are contrasted by some successful sound effects, which ensure a successful use of the surround channels and thus a very atmospheric sound carpet. Goose bumps are guaranteed more than once! Good!
Extras: When it comes to bonus material, the third season is a bit disappointing. There is only a short making of the Halloween episode on the first disc (ca. 10:22 min.), as well as a general season making of on disc 3 (ca. 16:16 min.), and a short documentary about the shooting in New Orleans (ca. 11:58 min.). After all: even though the extras disappoint in terms of quantity and unfortunately also no subtitle options are offered, the three featurettes are qualitatively very good and offer an entertaining, informative look at the genesis of the season. Good!
Fazit: "American Horror Story" is going new ways again in season 3. The story about a school for witches in New Orleans convinces with its atmospheric locations, the good actresses, a good pinch of macabre humour, as well as several successful goose bumps. Even though the finale isn't exactly one of the strongest moments of the series, this season also testifies to the genius of the concept of this horror series. The Blu-ray box presents the episodes of "Coven" in very good picture and sound quality and also offers a few extras that are worth seeing. For this there is a more than deserved one: Absolutely recommendable!
