That's really unfair: Pelle (Oscar Dietz) became the superhero Antboy by the bite of a mutated ant and is celebrated everywhere and yet he has to deal with the normal worries of a 13-year-old. Because his beloved Ida (Amalie Kruse Jensen) suddenly has only eyes for a new classmate, while Pelle is harassed by the nasty terror twins themselves as Antboy at every opportunity. And then there is the mysterious Red Fury (Astrid Juncher-Benzon), who seems to have a bill open with Antboy. How can one still concentrate on school?
With the film "Antboy", based on the popular books of the Danish children and youth author Kenneth Bøgh Andersen, Ask Hasselbach has not only achieved a real respect success in his home country. The film was sold in 35 countries and won the Danish Film Award for Best Children's Film. After this success, Hasselbach now presents "Antboy - The Revenge of Red Fury", the second part of his planned trilogy about the young superhero. Inspired by youth film classics of the 80s like the "Goonies" or "Stand by me", Hasselbach wanted to create an adventure film that doesn't chum up its young target group, but that really understands their desires, fears and dreams.
That he has also succeeded over long distances very well. The humor is harmless and very child-friendly and the problems Pelle (or Maria alias Red Fury) is confronted with can certainly be understood by many of the viewers up to the age of 13. The feeling of being an outsider, invisible to the popular children at school, or even the first great love and the associated first jealousy are presented in a sensitive but never masterly way. So children can identify perfectly with the protagonists, which makes the fantastic aspect of the story all the more exciting and exciting.
At times the humor is a bit too silly and the whole thing lacks the carefree charm of the first part. But all in all "Antboy - The Revenge of Red Fury" is a really successful sequel and an all-round convincing adventure film for children between 7 and 13 years. And there are enough nice jokes that you can also have fun with as an adult companion. So if you liked the first film and want to know how Antboy stands up to jealousy, terror twins and angry girls, you shouldn't miss this amusing and exciting children's adventure. Worth seeing
