Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) is no ordinary man. He's half human, half Atlantean. The powers he inherited from his mother Atlanna (Nicole Kidman) he uses as Aquaman in the fight against pirates and other villains. But otherwise he does not have much in common with the mystical underwater world. But then the Atlantic warrior Mera (Amber Heard) appears, who wants to convince Arthur that he should follow his destiny to take over the throne of Atlantis. Only in this way could a war be prevented that would also threaten the people on land. But Arthur doesn't want to know anything about it - until he meets his half-brother Orm (Patrick Wilson) and recognizes his dangerous hunger for power. But in order to defeat the Ocean Master, he needs a legendary weapon guarded by a dangerous creature - and even the greatest fighters have not been able to get past this guard yet…

After his successful appearance in the not really perfect "Justice League", Jason Momoa now gets his first solo appearance with "Aquaman". James Wan, who started three successful horror franchises with "Saw", "Conjuring" and "Insidious" and flushed well over 1 billion dollars into the box office with "Fast & Furious 7", was allowed to sit on the director's chair. Now he can try his hand at the DC Universe, which is not only criticized by critics, but also by fans (not without good reason). Sure, the script isn't very good in this movie either and towards the end there is a CG-overkill to be felt in this work as well. Nevertheless, Wan manages to do something that Zack Snyder's films almost completely missed. Wans "Aquaman" is simply fun!

His production is peppered with a wonderfully self-ironic wink. Wan is well aware of the trashy character of this superhero and his underwater world - and he celebrates it with full devotion. The result doesn't just look very good and takes the viewer into a colorful and imaginative underwater world. Because James Wan didn't go to work with the sinister seriousness that determined Snyder's DC films, creatures or scenes that would otherwise have been assumed to be funny to ridiculous seem rather funny and charming.

The same applies to the main actor Jason Momoa, who, with his slightly ironic play, lends the character of Aquaman a coolness that the comic strip template lacks. Okay, some of the dialogues that Momoa has to give of herself already belong to the category of "foreign shame" and don't let themselves be talked into being self-ironic. But even though the film's weaknesses make it far from revolutionizing the superhero genre, it still offers its viewers exactly what you can expect from a successful comic strip film: action, great effects, good-humoured actors and lots of fun. And for that there is a very clear one: Absolutely worth seeing!
