Many millions of years ago a meteorite hit the earth and caused the extinction of the dinosaurs. But what if this meteorite had missed the earth? The new Disney/Pixar production "Arlo & Spot" shows what could have been then. Millions of years after the near-collision, dinosaurs have developed significantly. Little Arlo lives with his parents and his two siblings on a small farm in the American Northwest. While his brother and sister show courage, strength and skill when working in the fields, the young Apatosaurus lacks all these qualities. And he'd love to make his parents proud. But when he does not fulfil his mission to protect the harvest from a small pest because he cannot kill the wild human child, it has fatal consequences: Arlo's father dies in the persecution of man. Now Arlo's world is finally in ruins. But fate brings the dinosaur and the little human boy together again and together they have to survive an adventure from which an unusual friendship seems to emerge…
The animated film "Arlo & Spot" has a difficult production history behind it. Various scriptwriters, directors and speakers were worn out until the start of the film, which was postponed again and again. The result is to be noted in some respects. Because while the dinosaur adventure is technically first class and offers some of the best landscape animations ever seen in cinema, the story has turned out to be very conventional. It almost seems as if Disney and Pixar have simply put together a best-of from the studios' pool. A little "Jungle Book", a little "Lion King", a pinch of "Find Nemo" and of course a lot of "Dinosaurs" and the story of "Arlo & Spot" is finished.
It's no big deal that the story about courage, friendship and family is a bit unimaginative. It's only because of the fact that only a few weeks ago with "Alles steht Kopf" a Pixar film came into our cinemas that was not only visually but also dramaturgically a feast of originality and proved that animated films can also be profound. Arlo & Spot" is far away from that. Nevertheless, Arlos adventurous journey with his little companion Spot is a lot of fun. Apart from some dark moments the movie offers a lot of good laughs, some emotional moments, in which you also have to sob a bit as an adult, and some well-done moments of tension, which make the adventure thrilling and exciting, especially for smaller viewers.
In 3D some of the landscape shots seem really spectacular. But even in conventional 2D, this enchanting dinosaur fairy tale offers a lot of great shots. In contrast to the very realistic landscape, the figure drawing is deliberately kept comic-like, which of course works very well for the title heroes with their big saucer eyes. "Arlo & Spot" may not be the best animated film of the year. There are much more successful candidates. But this work is just right to immerse yourself in an enchanting world with an exciting story and many amusing moments for almost 90 minutes. Not suitable for very young Dino fans. But children from 7 years and also the accompanying parents will have a lot of fun here. Absolutely worth seeing!
