Even almost 100 years after its publication, "Die Häschenschule" by the poet Albert Sixtus is one of the most popular children's books, especially during the Easter season. Even though the texts written in verse form now seem very antiquated, the drawings are simply timelessly beautiful. And since "Die Häschenschule" is still known to many children, it was obvious to turn the book into a colourful animated film. However, the history of adaptation has little in common with that of the book. The focus is on the cool city rabbit Max, who by chance gets into the rabbit school in the woods. Time seems to have stood still here, because there are still quite different customs than Max knows from the city. Too bad that he doesn't get away so easily, because behind the protective hedge the hungry fox family is waiting. But then the wise teacher Madame Hermine learns that Easter is in danger. And now it's Max of all people who could save Easter and the other rabbits - if only he believed in himself…

"Die Häschenschule - Jagd nach dem goldenen Ei" is a very nice animated film for young viewers who want to convey the usual themes such as friendship and tolerance. Director Ute von Münchow-Pohl tries to combine the characters of the book with new, contemporary characters/elements to create an exciting and funny film for children. At times, she manages to do that quite well, even though some elements of the story seem to be a bit too much of an effort. The figures are drawn very stereotypically. This is especially true for Max, who corresponds exactly to the cliché that adults have of a "cool big city kid". This may not bother the target group, but in the end it makes sure that the film lacks the charm that has given the book its timeless character...

The animations are deliberately kept rather simple, so as not to overwhelm younger children. And even when things get a little more exciting, it always remains within the bounds of what is bearable for children. In addition, the targeted use of humour ensures that it never gets too exciting for the little ones. The story is told in a relatively compact way, so that the running time is only just over 70 minutes - also a very child-friendly decision. Despite some dramaturgical weaknesses and some clichés, this rabbit adventure has become a really nice work for viewers between 5 and 8 years of age, which comforts us with some nice ideas and a well done ending. Worth seeing
