Dom (Vin Diesel) and Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) got married and live happily on Cuba. Brian and Mia have completely retreated. And also the rest of the team was acquitted of all previous convictions and accusations. The perfect happy ending, actually… Until one day Dom joins a dangerous cyber-terrorist (wonderfully evil: Charlize Theron) for some inexplicable reason and stands up against his "family". He manages to procure a dangerous weapon for his new partner that could seriously endanger world peace. Now Mr. Nobody (Kurt Russell) recruits Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson), Letty (Michelle Rodriguez), Roman (Tyrese Gibson), Tej (Chris "Ludacris" Bridges) and Ramsey (Nathalie Emmanuel) to stop Dom. And as if this task wasn't hard enough already, they are supposed to work together with Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) of all people, whom they just put behind bars. A merciless hunt begins around the globe, focusing on the question why Dom suddenly seems to fight all that he has fought for with body and soul in the past years.

The "Fast & Furious" franchise is really a rarity. Seldom does such a long-lasting series succeed in increasing success with every part. But the action series was lucky that after a weak second part and a really bad third part, the team around director Justin Lin decided for a complete restart with the original cast of part 1 - true to the motto: "New model - original parts". The movies became more and more exaggerated action crackers with elements from classic Heist movies and agent thrillers. Part 7 marked a turning point in several respects. For the first time since the third film, not Lin but James Wan directed. The film also marks the last appearance of Paul Walker, who died far too early. With over $1 billion in box-office takings worldwide, the seventh film was by far the most successful in the series.

Although the finale of the seventh part was not only a good ending for Walker's character Brian, who is said to have had a happy future with his wife, it was clear after the incredible success that the franchise had to go on. And so now "Fast & Furious 8" is blowing through our cinemas, this time directed by F. Gary Gray ("Straight Outta Compton", "The Italian Job"). The film is to be the starting shot for a new (and last) trilogy in which the cards are shuffled once again. The ingredients have of course remained the same: There are fast cars (even those you might not believe at first), fast-paced action, beautiful bodies and striking sayings.

Part 8 also plays well with the strengths of this franchise. The makers know that they don't offer a realistic, sophisticated cinema for the feuilleton, but adrenaline-charged fun cinema. And logic or the laws of physics are allowed to say goodbye. With a self-ironic twinkle in the eye it is also made clear that the audience shouldn't take the whole thing too seriously. Just turn off your brain and have fun. And on this level the new movie also works very well again. However, also with two limiting "but" …

The first refers to the rather dramatic moments of the story. Especially when it comes to the action and the cool slogans, it's clear that everything is deliberately staged in an overdone way, but the whole "Everything for the Family" mantra seems to be meant seriously. And that doesn't really fit, even seems unintentionally funny in the long run. It is simply applied much too thickly, which could also tolerate a little loosening. The second "but" refers to the action. No question about it, it's great and wonderful "Over the Top" again. But especially with the New York sequence you get the feeling that the point is reached where "more" doesn't necessarily mean "better". There are some really great moments here, but somehow it's almost too much of a good thing.

There would be another point of criticism, but it would tell too much about a certain twist. But despite all the justified criticisms, "Fast & Furious 8", like its predecessors, is a particularly entertaining popcorn cinema. Who could not do much with the series up to now, will certainly not become a fan now. But if you like the direction these movies have taken since part 4 and if you have a weakness for explosive action of a particularly imaginative kind, going to the movies will be a great pleasure for you. Absolutely worth seeing!
