From the big city to the provinces - unlike his mother, Zach Cooper (Dylan Minnette), a teenager, does not see this as a positive new beginning, but rather as a catastrophe. But the whole thing doesn't look so bad when he meets his beautiful neighbour Hannah (Odeya Rush). But between the two stands Hannah's grumpy father (Jack Black), who makes it clear to the boy at the first meeting that he doesn't want him to meet his daughter. But of course Zach doesn't stick to that. When he thinks that Hannah is in danger in her own house, he breaks in there with his new buddy Champ (Ryan Lee) and discovers an incredible secret: Hannah's father is none other than R.L. Stine, the author of the "goose bumps" novels. There is a good reason why he keeps himself and his daughter so isolated from the outside world. For the creatures he has devised for his books are alive and could pose a great danger to humans if he had not safely included them in his original manuscripts. Too bad that Zach and Champ open one of these books and thereby trigger a monstrous chain reaction that could fall victim to their entire city…

With over 400 million copies sold worldwide in 32 languages, the "Goose Bumps" books are among the most successful novel series ever. Only the adventures of "Harry Potter" have sold even better. Author R.L. Stine hit a nerve with his young readers when he published the first book in 1992, writing exciting horror and monster stories from the perspective of teenagers. Some of the stories and creatures were adapted in a television series produced between 1995 and 1998. But the works of R.L. Stine have not yet made it to the cinema.

This is now changing with the 3D adventure "Goose Bumps", a humorous horror film for teenagers aged 12 and over. Director Rob Letterman ("Monsters vs. Aliens") obviously orientates himself towards the genre classics of the 80s, especially in the first half. In terms of mood, his movie clearly reminds us of works like "The Goonies" or "Gremlins", whereby the latter is clearly quoted when a horde of nasty garden gnomes attack. The first sixty minutes are full of humour, charm and funny ideas, while the level of tension and horror is still kept at a very tame level. But when the monsters break out of all the books and hit the city, the action gets much more action-packed.

As many CGI-effects are used here, unfortunately a little bit of the charm gets lost. Again and again the film threatens to lose itself in an effects overkill. But with a sure hand, Letterman manages to turn the tide in time through the targeted use of loosening jokes or short moments of calm. Very positive is the fact that the humor almost never moves on too flat terrain. The toilet humor, which is so popular with a young target audience, is almost never used here. Admittedly, not everyone pulls a gag, but some are so wonderfully weird that the few that don't work are quickly forgotten.

The young actors do their job really well, even if their characters aren't much more than changing clichés. Also the big "surprise" is convincingly implemented by Dylan Minnette ("Prisoners") and Odeya Rush ("Keeper of Memory"). And Jack Black convinces as R.L. Stine (who by the way makes a small guest appearance himself) with the right mixture of a little bit withdrawn comedy and seriousness. Even though "Gooseflesh" isn't a masterpiece, the film is still a perfect entertainment cinema with wit, suspense, proper effects and a good portion of heart. And for that there is one more than satisfied. Absolutely worth seeing!
