Julius (Paul "Sido" Worthy), a well-behaved family man with a penchant for trickery, the well-protected Yasin (Fahri Yardim) and the cheeky hobby rapper Addi (Tedros "Teddy" Teclebrhan) couldn't be more different. But when they meet at a notary's, they learn that they have more in common than they would like. Because the three are half-brothers whose mother passed away recently. In order to gain their inheritance, they would have to go on a kind of scavenger hunt together - especially for Julius, this is a true horror. But his money worries are so enormous that he agrees to the road trip, which will take the unequal men from Berlin via Frankfurt and Cologne to the island of Fehmarn. They get from one turbulent situation to the next and not only put their still fresh family ties, but also their heritage and even their lives in real danger...
There is no question that Christian Alvart is a very talented and versatile director. His internationally acclaimed thriller "Antibodies", his enormously successful Til Schweiger "Tatort" episodes, his Hollywood production "Fall 39", the SciFi thriller "Pandorum" or the successful excursion into the 60s with "Banklady", Alvart has proven a good hand for atmosphere, suspense and great pictures even with weak scripts. With "Halbe Brüder" Alvart dares for the first time to present a comedy of a particularly turbulent kind. In terms of craftsmanship, the film is beyond all doubt. The good camera work, the fast cuts and the target group-oriented soundtrack make the comedy look like a big movie in almost every scene - which is not a matter of course for a German production.
Not quite as convincing is the screenplay by Doron Wisotzky ("Schlussmacher"), on the other hand, which too often relies on deeper jokes and doesn't get enough out of the witty original idea. In many cases the humor is very difficult to get used to. The only hissing crook in a rabbit costume might divide the audience as much as the somewhat exhausting and only limited funny kind of Tedro's "Teddy" Teclebrhan. Certainly, the actor and comedian has a steadily growing fan base. However, his humor is already very special and can quickly become extremely annoying for some viewers. Fahri Yardim, who has already proven several times that he can be both funny and actor, sells himself under value in many scenes, which is also due to the more one-dimensional character drawing in the script. Rapper Sido, on the other hand, can leave a thoroughly positive impression, not only revealing his acting talent, but also making his role really interesting through real sympathy values.
Who likes a dirty humor, which often takes place in lower body regions, and who can laugh heartily about the very own style of Tedro's "Teddy" Teclebrhan, will certainly have a lot of fun with "Half Brothers". Who on the other hand has hoped for a comedy of a high standard and who needs more for a successful comedy than a successful visual realization and some amusing guest appearances, this road trip through Germany could drive him close to despair. Therefore there is only one: with restrictions worth seeing!
