Content: Slowly John Nettles is approaching the home straight also in Germany. While he has already retired Tom Barnaby in his home country in 2011, the German fans still have a few unsent cases, which delay the farewell a little. Even if it will go on with the successor Neil Dudgeon alias John Barnaby, the farewell of John Nettles after fourteen series years still represents a decisive cut. This 19th DVD box with episodes from the 12th and 13th season is a very good proof that this also makes sense.

Due to the fact that the murderous hustle and bustle in the picturesque county of Midsomer still proves to be extremely entertaining and that the sometimes quite bizarre inhabitants who assassinate, intrigue, lie and cheat still reveal a great deal of entertainment potential even after all these years, the concept, which has hardly varied over the years, cannot hide slight signs of fatigue. Although the makers sometimes try for a change, this doesn't always work as well, as you can see in the rather disappointing episode "Blood on the Saddle". Nevertheless: even a weak Barnaby is often even better than some other TV food. And so fans in these four new cases will be able to enjoy how Barnaby and his colleague DC Ben Jones (Jason Hughes) are trying to put a stop to Midsomer's bad fingers.

And that's what the new episodes are about:

DVD 1: Screaming at Night (Season 12, Ep. 7)

Village School Teacher Connie Bishop calls for help at night, convinced that there is a burglar in the house. But the neighbors can't find anybody, not even tracks. The next day, Connie sleepwalks bloodstained through her garden. There's a dead man lying there stalking her during her lifetime. A short time later the locksmith Laurence Mann is cut in the throat of Connie's garden house after a whimsical evening with her. Connie's had nightmares and she's not sure she's the killer. Zukie Richardson, the doubts about Connie's sanity come just at the right time. The socially ambitious wife of the rich Howard disputes the chairmanship of the Frobisher Night-Committee. She wants to turn the village charity ball into a glamorous event for the region. Barnaby and Jones are caught in a tangle of sexual stalking, vicious rivalries and envy in their murder investigations. (Text: ZDF)

DVD 2: Heads is also no solution (Season 13, Ep. 2)

Barnaby Causton's mayor David Hicks has been targeting for a long time - because of fraud, advantage taking and lucrative businesses that cost the municipality dearly. When Hicks drives to the twin town of Brighton with the city council and interested citizens, the inspector smells the crooked business again and rides along. The universally hated real estate developer Hugh Dagleish is also there. For pleasure, Hugh climbs into a ghost train on the beach promenade and comes out with his head cut off. The murder investigations are being conducted by Brighton's chief inspector, Tom's cousin John Barnaby. Back in Midsomer Parva, hotel and boutique owner Jenny Russell is beheaded the same way. After all, there is a prime suspect for this murder, Jenny's husband, whom she threw out of the house and business because of notorious infidelity. He went into Jenny's bedroom the night of the murder to steal jewelry and cash. But both Barnabys are skeptical. They'd rather look for a connection with the mayor's fraudulent deals. But there are also traces of Lady Matilda William, who obviously weaves a web of lies around the accident that put her son Richard in a wheelchair. Why? (Text: ZDF)

DVD 3: You have to believe it! (Season 13, Ep. 1)

In Milton Cross two years ago the tailor Gerald Woodley died of a heart attack while gardening. Now his widow Sonia is beaten to death on the way to confession. A little later, her confessor, Reverend Moreland, is also cut in the throat. Almost the whole village belongs to Lord Edward Milton; manor house, church, several farms with fields belong to him. He prevents Luke and Matthew, the son and brother of the dead Gerald, from prosecuting the young Gary Soper for shoplifting. After all, Gary's mother Katie often helps out the Woodleys sewing. He advises Barnaby not to listen to the bad gossip about Gerald. He had not beaten his Sonia, but had been a very decent citizen and Christian. A do-gooder? Barnaby senses that some of the villagers are keeping their knowledge of the landlord behind the scenes. Only immediately before a third murder of the farmer's wife Katie Soper the investigators manage to snatch his secrets from the village. After that, they don't turn their backs on Milton Cross immediately. You are flirting with a tailor-made suit, handmade by Woodley & Woodley. (Text: ZDF)

DVD 4: Blood on saddle (Season 13, Ep. 3)

For years the farmers Silas Burbadge and father and son Fincher have been fighting over a piece of land called The Swamp. Dan Malko wants to buy it to settle down with his travelling commune and the fight takes on deadly dimensions: A stranger murders the Finchers, their lawyer and the farm manager. Since all murders are based on the customs of the Wild West, Barnaby and Jones are looking for their murderer among the participants of the Western Festival currently taking place in Ford Florey. In the showdown Barnaby, Jones and the widow Susan Fincher get into life danger. (Text: edel:Motion)

Picture + sound: The four new episodes do not offer any big surprises not only in terms of content, but also on an audiovisual level: Thus, in the darker scenes there are also some small blurs and slight image noise, but the overall picture quality, especially in the brighter outdoor shots, is on a good TV level in terms of sharpness, colouring and contrast adjustment. The stereo sound is still quite pleasantly lively based on the fact that the centrally mixed dialogues and the music determine the action. For a TV production this is completely sufficient and therefore deserves a satisfied one: Gut!

Extras: Except for Trailer there is unfortunately no bonus material.

Conclusion: "Inspector Barnaby" is slowly but surely approaching the inevitable turning point in Germany at which John Nettles left the series. But until then, there are still a few episodes in the usual Midsomer manner in which Nettles as Tom Barnaby together with his colleague DS Ben Jones tries to stop the murderous hustle and bustle in the county. The four new cases are of different quality, but in total the 19th DVD box offers the fans exactly what they can expect from their favourite series: a lot of British humour, slightly bizarre characters, unusual murder cases and also a little bit of suspense of the dignified kind - as always very British and very worth seeing!
