Some months ago it's been a few months now since Nerd Spencer, jock Fridge, the self-indulgent Bethany and the inconspicuous Martha were drawn into the video game "Jumanji". Her life has changed drastically since then. Only Spencer feels weak and insignificant compared to his avatar Dr. Smolder Bravestone (Dwayne Johnson). And so he secretly sets about repairing the game that was actually destroyed - with fatal consequences. When the others discover that Spencer is back in "Jumanji", they decide to help him. But things go wrong and while Martha finds herself again in the avatar of the fighter Ruby Roundhouse (Karen Gillan), Fridge wakes up this time in the body of the overweight researcher Dr. Shelly Oberon (Jack Black). But this is not the real surprise, because in the avatars of Dr. Bravestone and von Mouse Finbar (Kevin Hart) put Spencer's grandfather Eddie (Danny DeVito) and his former business partner Milo (Danny Glover) …
"Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle", the quasi-reboot/remake/sequel to the 1995 fantasy adventure "Jumanji" with Robin Williams, was a real surprise success two years ago. Not only that the action-packed adventure comedy has earned nearly $1 billion worldwide. The film was also well received by critics and audience alike. This was not only due to the prominent cast with action megastar Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart and Jack Black, known for their comic roles. Rather, it was the numerous original screenplay ideas, the self-ironic play of the actors and the successful mixture of action and humour that made this film a box-office hit.
Clear that a sequel was needed. Although the predecessor actually offered a good and round ending, a way was found to tell the story further and take it to the next level. Since the creators around director Jake Kasdan knew that they would miss the surprise effect this time, they simply mixed up the basic constellation a little bit and expanded the troupe by the two odd pensioners Eddie and Milo. And that was a good decision. Because in principle "Jumanji - The Next Level" offers little that is new. The movie is a typical sequel, which simply varies, which worked well once before.
But just because of the small changes and additions, it works really well a second time. The movie offers great laughs non-stop, has a lot of charm and also delivers great effects and breathtaking action. In short: This new trip into the world of "Jumanji" is simply a lot of fun. It's just wonderful to see how much joy the actors take in targeting their own image and how they are not too bad for slapstick interludes.
Yes, we really don't enter new territory here. Those who had hoped for it, will surely be disappointed by this sequel. However, if you can't get enough of the good chemistry between the actors, the humor and the imaginative world of Jumanji, then you will do everything right again by buying a movie ticket. Absolutely worth seeing!
