The young photographer François (Frédéric Chau) lives a happy life in Paris with his girlfriend Sophie (Julie de Bona) - and it gets even better when François learns that he will soon be a father. After the anticipation, François realizes that the time has come to finally face his Asian roots again. For years he has had no contact with his father and the rest of the family living in the Chinese part of Paris. With the support of his best friend Bruno (Medi Sadoun) François ventures back to Chinatown. He is welcomed with open arms by aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, but his father only gives him the cold shoulder. Now François realizes that he must jump over his own shadow if he is to succeed in winning back his father's love. But this is more difficult than thought…

With his role as Chao in the two "Monsieur Claude" films, Frédéric Chau has also become known to a wider audience in Germany. Now the Vietnamese native can show in "Made in China" that he can also wear a comedy on his own. All right, not all by yourself. Here, too, he gets support from his "Monsieur Claude" colleague Medi Sadoun, who as Bruno is primarily responsible for the comedy aspect of the movie. Although the film is also otherwise predominantly cheerful and relaxed entertainment, it also has some serious moments in which François' cultural dissension and the difficult relationship with his father take centre stage.

The film touches on some interesting and socio-politically extremely topical points. But unfortunately all this, like the rest of the story, remains too much on the surface. Because the script that Chau wrote together with director Julien Abraham moves, despite some nice ideas, too much on well-trodden paths. For example, there is a moment when reconciliation between father and son seems close enough to touch. What happens then, however, is already predictable to such an extent that the viewer is just disappointed that the makers actually went this unimaginative cliché way.

A few amusing moments, the charming actors and the fact that you finally get to see Paris from a slightly different side, makes "Made in China" some weaknesses still entertaining and entertaining at the end. But if you expect a really funny culture-clash comedy with biting wit in the style of "Monsieur Claude", you will be disappointed by this very good, predictable movie. All in all, a clear case of: Worth seeing with some concessions!
