The music of ABBA is really immortal. After the musical "Mamma Mia!" with the greatest hits of the Swedish cult band became a huge success, which continues to this day, the prominently cast screen adaptation attracted millions of fans to the cinemas. With a worldwide box-office income of 600 million dollars, musical romance is one of the most successful cinema musicals ever. Now come on with "Mamma Mia! Here we go again" the inevitable sequel in the cinemas. But since the story is actually finished and strictly speaking already too thin for a movie, let alone offering enough material for a sequel, part 2 simply goes back to the past.

The forthcoming opening of the hotel, which Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) built in memory of her mother Donna, serves as a framework action. But everything goes wrong: of her three possible fathers only Sam (Pierce Brosnan) can come to the party, her husband Sky (Dominic Cooper) is in New York and got a job offer there and then a storm devastates the island. Luckily there are memories of Donna and of the summer when she came to the Greek island as a young woman (Lily James) and met three wonderful men, one of whom gave her a very special present: Sophie…

Okay, once upon a time they were very honest: "Mamma Mia! Here we go again" exists only for one reason - to make even more money with the songs of ABBA. The story of this sequel is a tediously bobbled carpet of action fragments, whereby the flashbacks to the young Donna work out really well. This is partly due to the rousing songs that were selected for this second part (although there are overlaps to the predecessor despite the quite extensive ABBA repertoire), but also to the main actress Lily James. The actress known from "Downton Abbey", "Cinderella" and "Baby Driver" radiates so much charm with a truly sunny disposition that she completely forgets small dramaturgical weaknesses.

Although the framing plot playing in the present seems like a cramped attempt to bring all the actors from the predecessor together again, the film leaves a very positive overall impression at the end - at least for fans of the original. When many happy people sing and dance "Dancing Queen" together in a dreamlike setting, you can't help but smile blissfully. Yes, it's extremely manipulative - just like a scene towards the end that will make many people's eyes wet - but it just works.

Whoever liked the first movie, loves the music of ABBA (two of the members also have short guest appearances) and is simply looking for an easy vacation from everyday life can warmly recommend this sequel. However, if you hope for something like depth or a really original story, you might be bitterly disappointed. Therefore there is the "Absolutely worth seeing" also only with small restrictions!
