Film: Actually the ingenious investigator Hercule Poirot (Kenneth Branagh) wanted to use the journey in the Orient Express for a long overdue time-out. But then the shady art dealer Edward Ratchett (Johnny Depp) is murdered and it quickly becomes clear: the perpetrator must still be on the train. When he is lifted from the tracks by an avalanche and stuck in the snow, Poirot has no choice but to end his time-out and use his dreaded nose. But who would have had a motive for killing Ratchett? His alcohol-addicted secretary Hector (Josh Gad)? Or the inconspicuous governess Mary Debenham (Daisy Ridley)? Are the Spanish missionary Pilar Estravados (Penelope Cruz) or the somewhat talkative widow Caroline Hubbard (Michelle Pfeiffer) also among the suspects? Poirot cannot yet explain who is behind the murder. He only knows one thing: Nothing here is what it seems to be…

Kenneth Branagh delivers the fourth film adaptation of Agatha Christies novel "Murder in the Orient Express" from 1934. The best-known adaptation to date is undoubtedly that by director Sidney Lumet from 1974, in which Albert Finney investigated as Poirot against a top-class ensemble of greats such as Sean Connery, Ingrid Bergman, Anthony Perkins and Vanessa Redgrave. When it comes to star power, Branagh's version can certainly keep up. He actually did everything right with the cast. Whether Johnny Depp in a small but important role, "Star Wars" hero Daisy Ridley or the venerable Judi Dench - they all deliver good to very good performances. Branagh himself is - apart from his exaggerated moustache - a good Poirot, even if he will never be able to hold a candle to Peter Ustinov. Ustinov, who as Agatha Christie's master detective never solved the case in the Orient Express, is and remains simply the best Poirot ever.

The staging is classic in the best sense of the word. Of course, Branagh takes some liberties here and there and also scatters a little humor in which only very great admirers of the book could be disturbed. Otherwise, however, he sticks closely to Christie's novel and delivers a visually great old-school crime movie, which is still very entertaining even if you already know the resolution. The script is entertaining enough and the atmosphere created by sets, camera and music is so captivating that there is really no boredom.

Sure, this is neither a perfect film, nor the best adaptation of the novel. Nevertheless, this "Murder in the Orient Express" is a great entertainment cinema, which can score with an elegant old-fashioned production, great actors and an exciting story again and again. Yes, we didn't really need this version. But when a material is recycled so convincingly, the lack of originality is of little concern. And so, despite some minor weaknesses, there is a very clear recommendation: get on board and enjoy an exciting ride on this Orient Express! Absolutely worth seeing!

Picture + sound: The picture is absolutely clean and has a very good sharpness of detail in many scenes. The slightly artificial-looking coloration is powerful and shows its particularly atmospheric side especially in the outdoor shots at the beginning of the film. So there are no notable defects to complain about here, just as there are with the sound quality. The DTS 5.1 Mix is pleasantly lively and can convince again and again with good surround moments. But there is one more than satisfied: Good!

Extras: For the Blu-ray a quite extensive bonus package was put together. We start with a quite entertaining and interesting audio commentary by Branagh and screenwriter Michael Green. Both of them have a lively conversation about the adaptation of the classic and the shooting. The two then continue this conversation with the 13 deleted, extended and alternative scenes (approx. 16:40 min.). Your comment can be switched on optionally for these scenes. You can also see an alternative beginning and a visually really great scene at the departure of the Orient-Express.

The additional offer continues with a portrait of Agatha Christie (ca. 19:03 min.). And also the Hercule Poirot created by her gets her own short documentary (ca. 9:54 min.) The usual making of material continues: Both the three-part documentary "Die unüblichen Verdächtigen" (ca. 5:08 + 5:56 + 6:49 min.) and the "Die Unüblichen Verdächtigen" (ca. 5:08 + 5:56 + 6:49 min.).), as well as "Die Kunst des Mordes" (approx. 16:23 min.), "Alle an Bord" (approx. 16:35 min.) and "Die Musik im Film" (approx. 7:31 min.) illuminate different facets of the production, from the actors to the sets, the locations and the music. Very good.

Fazit: "Murder in the Orient Express" is a classic crime film with a great cast and some high viewing figures, so that the whole thing is very entertaining even if you know the outcome from the book or a previous film version. At the box office the movie was so convincing that Branagh was already allowed to plan the next Christie movie. The Blu-ray of the cinema success presents the film in good picture and sound quality and also has some really good extras on board. There's more than earned in return: absolutely recommended!
