Milo (Elyas M`Barek) is tired of being a bartender and is tired of being a nightmare. He would much rather open his own shop with his best buddy Renzo (Frederick Lau). But unfortunately the friends do not get a loan because of Renzo's criminal record. But Milo is still happy: He has met the charming and attractive Sunny (Palina Rojinski) and is looking forward to their first date together that evening. Too bad only that Renzo tried to get the money for his own bar on his own and that now not only some mighty sour gangsters are after him but also after Milo. And so the actually relaxed planned date turns into a wild trip through Berlin at night - not a very promising beginning for a possible relationship between Milo and Sunny…

With German cinema comedies this is one thing. Especially in recent years, there have been either only typical standard food from the house of Schweiger and Schweighöfer, extremely platitudinous racket or works that desperately try to combine humour and high standards. Every now and then, however, filmmakers manage to place themselves somewhere in between, which works out really well in the ideal case. "Nightlife", the new film by Simon Verhoeven ("Welcome to the Hartmanns") is such a case. Yes, the humour is often pure racket. And yes, the characters are often overdrawn. But: In contrast to many other comedies the characters always remain likeable, the pacing is never too overdone and even shallow moments are saved by a big portion of charm. </When the nasty master criminal, beautifully impersonated by Nicholas Ofczarek, mutates into a well-behaved yes-man for his wife out of fear of her outbursts of rage, or when Sunny takes revenge on a sleazy ex in a somewhat unusual way, then it's not only very entertaining, but also really funny. And even moments that shouldn't really work - like an evening of games that is in itself completely overdone - make for really good laughs here, as Verhoeven sacrifices his characters for the gags. So even these strange participants of the games evening somehow grow on you and you don't have to laugh about them but with them when the events in the small apartment escalate completely. </Nightlife" may not be a masterpiece, but it is one of the funniest comedies of recent years. The chemistry between Elyas M`Barek and Palina Rojinski is absolutely believable and Frederick Lau gives the slightly offbeat best buddy in an absolutely lovable-chaotic way. Watching this trio chase through Berlin at night is great fun, which you can forgive minor lapses. Amusing dialogues, a well-dosed portion of slapstick, wonderfully weird supporting characters and good music - all this makes "Nightlife" all in all: Absolutely worth seeing!</p>
